Plan 01

1 day in Puttaparthi

  1. 01

Day 1: Sessions, museum and a quiet afternoon

Reach Prasanthi Nilayam in time for the morning session in Sai Kulwant Hall, dressed to the ankles with phones and cameras left at your room. After the session, walk to Chaitanya Jyoti Museum if it is open, then have lunch at one of the ashram canteens. Rest through the hottest hours, and if the space theatre has a show you can attend, fit it in. In the late afternoon return for the evening session and finish with an early dinner before the canteens close.

Chaitanya Jyoti Museum1.5 to 2 hoursEasyOpen sessions are limited, so go at the start of a session; late morning is cooler than midday outside

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Prasanthi Nilayam: Paths inside the campus are mostly level and the main hall is a large covered space, but queues, barefoot sections and long sits on the floor can be tiring. Ask staff about seating arrangements for older visitors, and carry water and a hat for the walk between buildings.

Plan 02

2 days in Puttaparthi

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and the ashram

Arrive, settle in and read the campus rules. Attend the evening session in Sai Kulwant Hall, then eat at a canteen. Keep the evening light; the ashram day starts early.

  2. 02

Day 2: Museum, planetarium and the district

Join the morning session, then visit Chaitanya Jyoti Museum and, if there is a show, the space theatre. After lunch and a rest, ask your driver for a short drive towards Penukonda, about 29 km away, to see the lower fort in softer afternoon light, or stay on campus for the evening session.

Plan 03

3 days in Puttaparthi

  1. 01

    Day 1: The ashram rhythm

Settle in, attend the evening session and eat at a canteen. The aim of day one is to understand the routine rather than to see everything.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Penukonda and Lepakshi

Leave early by car for Penukonda Fort, about 29 km away, and see the lower buildings before the heat builds. Continue to the Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi, which is about 35 km beyond Penukonda via Hindupur, for its ceiling murals and the monolithic Nandi. Return in the evening and rest.

Pace: Penukonda Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Penukonda Fort: The hill involves uneven granite and little shade. Older travellers can stick to the lower buildings and the tank area, and skip the climb. Carry water and wear sturdy shoes.

  3. 03

Day 3: Museum, silk and a last session

Visit Chaitanya Jyoti Museum and the space theatre in the morning. In the afternoon, if you want a craft stop, ask your driver about Dharmavaram's handloom silk shops, or give the afternoon to rest. Finish with the evening session in Sai Kulwant Hall.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Puttaparthi trip for parents and children

  • Dress for the ashram before you arrive: ankle-length clothing, a dupatta for women, and footwear that slips off easily. It avoids hurried changes in the heat.
  • Ask volunteers about seating arrangements for older visitors before a session; the main hall involves sitting on the floor for long periods.
  • Plan around the heat: March to May is very hot, so go between November and February if you can.
  • Eat at the ashram canteens within the posted windows; they are mild, vegetarian and close in the evening.
  • Skip the hilltop at Penukonda and stay with the lower sights; the climb is on uneven stone with little shade.
  • Book ashram rooms well ahead, and keep one buffer day for rest on any itinerary that includes Lepakshi.
