Before you go

Puttaparthi with elderly parents: what to know

  • Dress for the ashram before you arrive: ankle-length clothing, a dupatta for women, and footwear that slips off easily. It avoids hurried changes in the heat.
  • Ask volunteers about seating arrangements for older visitors before a session; the main hall involves sitting on the floor for long periods.
  • Plan around the heat: March to May is very hot, so go between November and February if you can.
  • Eat at the ashram canteens within the posted windows; they are mild, vegetarian and close in the evening.
  • Skip the hilltop at Penukonda and stay with the lower sights; the climb is on uneven stone with little shade.
  • Book ashram rooms well ahead, and keep one buffer day for rest on any itinerary that includes Lepakshi.

Easiest first

Places in Puttaparthi sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Chaitanya Jyoti Museum (Culture and craft · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Indoors and generally level, with galleries to walk through at your own speed. Benches and rest points vary, so ask staff. It is a useful place to be during the hottest part of the day.
  • Dharmavaram Silk Weaving Town (Shopping · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Mostly short walks between shops and workshops on town streets. Traffic and noise can be tiring; hire a car and driver and ask them to wait.
  • Prasanthi Nilayam Canteens (Food and restaurants · 45 to 60 minutes per meal) — Level and covered, with seating at tables. Food is simple, mild and vegetarian. Queues can form at peak times, so go at the start of a window.
  • Sai Kulwant Hall and Mahasamadhi (Places of worship · 1.5 to 2.5 hours for one session including arrival and queuing) — The hall is level and sheltered, but you sit on the floor for a long session and queue to enter. Ask staff or volunteers about seating for older visitors, bring a thin cushion cloth if allowed, and keep water for afterwards.
  • Sri Sathya Sai Hill View Stadium (Sports · 30 minutes, or longer on event days) — Event access is the usual way in. Seating tiers can be long and sunny, and distances inside a large stadium add up, so older visitors should confirm seating and shade before an event.
  • Sri Sathya Sai Space Theatre (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — Indoors, with seating for 150 as listed by the ashram. Short walks on level paths from the main hall; ask staff about the best seats for anyone with stiff knees.
  • Thimmamma Marrimanu (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes, plus travel) — Shade is plentiful, but ground conditions and fencing may vary. Distances from the car park are short as far as the sources suggest; confirm locally. Carry water.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Prasanthi Nilayam (Places of worship · Half a day for the main hall and museum; a full day or more for a devotional visit) — Paths inside the campus are mostly level and the main hall is a large covered space, but queues, barefoot sections and long sits on the floor can be tiring. Ask staff about seating arrangements for older visitors, and carry water and a hat for the walk between buildings.

Practical tips for Puttaparthi

  • Dress code. Ankle-length clothing applies to everyone, with a dupatta for women. Shorts, sleeveless tops and tight or see-through clothes are not allowed. Pack accordingly, not as an afterthought.
  • Phones and cameras. Phones, cameras and recording devices are not allowed in Sai Kulwant Hall or the mandir. Leave them at your room.
  • Heat. March to May brings daytime highs near 40 degrees. Plan outdoor sights early and rest in the afternoon.
  • Getting around. The campus is walkable. For Penukonda, Lepakshi and Dharmavaram, hire a car and driver rather than relying on local buses.
  • Booking rooms. Ashram rooms open for online booking about a month ahead, with a short maximum stay; online booking is closed for November. Bring original photo ID.
  • Meals. Canteens serve fixed meals and close around 8 pm. Eggs, meat, alcohol and tobacco are not allowed on campus.
  • Footwear. Wear footwear that slips on and off easily, because you remove it at the doors of each hall.
  • Festival days. Timings of sessions change on festival days. Check the notices posted at the ashram and avoid November if you prefer fewer crowds.
