Before you go
Raigarh with elderly parents: what to know
- Travel between November and February. March to June is hot, and the monsoon makes forest roads and rock-shelter paths slippery.
- Hire a car with driver for all day trips; public transport to Chandrahasini, Kabra Pahar and Gomarda is limited.
- Chandrahasini temple stands on a hill, so check the steps at the site and go slowly; ask your driver to wait at the nearest approach.
- Kabra Pahar has no made path. Wear shoes with grip, carry water, take a local guide and decline the walk if the ground is wet.
- Carry any regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit; the forest roads towards Gomarda are far from hospitals.
- During festival days at the temples and the Chakradhar Samaroh, reach early and plan an exit; crowds build in the evenings.
Easiest first
Places in Raigarh sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Chakradhar Samaroh (Culture and craft · An evening, or several evenings) — Evening performances are mostly seated and level. Arrive early for seating, check toilets and transport back to your hotel, and expect humidity in September.
- Gaurishankar Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — Being in the city centre, it is easy to reach by car or auto. Check the number of steps at the entrance and expect crowds on festival days.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Chandrahasini Temple (Places of worship · 2 to 3 hours including the drive) — The temple stands on a hill and involves steps, though the exact number is not given here. Ask your driver to park as close as possible, take the climb slowly, and avoid festival days if crowds are a concern.
- Gomarda Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day, including the drive) — Most of the experience is from a vehicle, which suits older visitors. Roads can be rough, there are no published facilities, and help is far away, so carry water, medicines and a charged phone.
- Kabra Pahar Rock Paintings (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours including the walk) — There is no proper access path; visitors work their way through vegetation and loose stones. Older travellers or anyone with balance issues should take a guide or view only from the base.

Practical tips for Raigarh
- Heat. May is the hottest month, with mean highs above 41 C. Plan outdoor visits for early morning and rest after lunch.
- Monsoon. July and August bring about 400 mm of rain each. Rock-shelter paths and forest tracks become slippery, so avoid them in these months.
- Getting around. Autos and e-rickshaws serve the city, but a car with driver is the practical choice for Chandrahasini, Kabra Pahar and Gomarda.
- Airport and trains. Raigarh has a station on the main Howrah–Mumbai line. For flights, Jharsuguda is closest at about 95 km.
- Guides. Ask your hotel to arrange a local guide for Kabra Pahar, where the path is not marked.
- Dress. Dress modestly at temples and carry a scarf. Remove footwear before entering shrines.
- Photography. Check rules at temples before photographing inside. Do not touch painted rock surfaces.
- Money. Carry cash for small shops, temple offerings and guides, as card acceptance is patchy outside the hotels.
