The short answer

Misool: what visitors should know first

Misool is for travellers who want the quiet south and have several spare days. It is far from Waisai and Sorong, so treat it as a dedicated trip rather than an add-on, and think carefully if you are travelling with older parents.

History and context

The story behind Misool

Wikipedia says Misool was part of the Dutch colonial empire and that Japan occupied the island in 1942 and used it as a naval base until 1945. Islam arrived in the Raja Ampat Islands in the 15th century through contact with the Bacan Sultanate.

Misool Island Nature Reserve was established in 1982 and covers the southern part of the island.

Why it matters

Why Misool is worth your time

Misool offers a quieter, more remote version of Raja Ampat than the Dampier Strait. The island has its own history, languages and communities, and its landscape combines rainforest, karst and reef. Wikipedia notes endemic rainbowfish on land and the wider Coral Triangle in the water.

It matters for a different reason too: it shows how large the archipelago is. A trip here is a journey in its own right, and for older or less mobile travellers it is often better admired from a distance than attempted.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Misool is the large southern island of Raja Ampat, with about 2,034 square kilometres of land and a highest point of 561 metres, according to Wikipedia. Its main towns are Waigama and Lilinta. Wikivoyage mentions ferries from Sorong running on certain days, but schedules change, so most visitors go through a resort or operator.

On the water, Wikivoyage points to excellent diving, a prehistoric karst cave, ancient rock paintings, and a place where visitors can swim with freshwater jellyfish that do not sting. Confirm with your operator which of these are open and suitable; conditions and access can change and some require climbing in and out of boats.

The southern part of the island is the Misool Island Nature Reserve, established in 1982 and listed by Wikipedia as a strict nature reserve. Respect any boundaries your guide sets, and bring everything you need, since supplies and services are limited.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a confirmed transfer rather than relying on public ferries
  • Ask which sights are open and how hard access is
  • Bring medicines and cash
  • Buy the marine park permit
