The short answer
Sorong: what visitors should know first
Plan to arrive in Sorong, stock up on cash and medicines, sleep a night if your flight and ferry do not connect, and move on to the islands. It is a practical hub rather than a destination.
History and context
The story behind Sorong
Wikipedia describes Sorong as an oil and gas producer and an entry hub to Papua, and notes that Southwest Papua became Indonesia's 38th province in December 2022.

Why it matters
Why Sorong is worth your time
Sorong matters because every route to Raja Ampat passes through it or Waisai. The way you arrange this transfer, including buffer time, cash and permit, determines how smooth the rest of the trip feels.
As the largest city nearby, it is where older travellers would most likely be taken for serious medical care. We could not verify a specific hospital for this guide, so ask your hotel and keep insurance details handy.

How to experience it
Sorong is the capital of Southwest Papua province and its largest city, says Wikipedia. Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) is about 8 km from the centre, with domestic flights from Jakarta, Denpasar, Makassar, Manado and other places; Wikipedia notes that, although designated international in August 2025, it serves only domestic flights.
The ferry to Waisai leaves from the people's port, Pelabuhan Rakyat. Allow at least two hours between airport and port, as Wikivoyage advises, because delays happen. If you arrive late, sleep in Sorong and take the morning boat. Wikivoyage lists Swiss-Belhotel Sorong, Hotel Paparisa Manise and The Ignislo as options.
In the evening, Wikivoyage mentions seafood hawkers at the Tembok Berlin beach area and a gado-gado warung. Use the city to withdraw cash, as Wikivoyage advises, and to buy medicines and water before leaving.

- No tickets needed. Ferry tickets to Waisai are sold at the port; Wikivoyage mentions the tourism office near the airport for permits. Allow generous time between flights and ferry departures.
