Raja Ampat is an archipelago off the north-western tip of New Guinea's Bird's Head Peninsula, in Indonesia's Southwest Papua province. Wikipedia lists four main islands: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. The name means 'four kings', and the waters belong to the Coral Triangle, which is why divers come from around the world.
It is not an easy destination. Sorong, the mainland gateway, is reached by domestic flights, and from there a ferry of around two hours (Wikivoyage) goes to Waisai on Waigeo. Beyond Waisai there is no public boat network, so island trips are arranged through homestays, resorts or operators. Distances are long, power can be limited, and help is far away.
The reward is scenery and reef. The karst islets of Wayag and the Fam Islands, the village of Arborek, the dive sites around Kri and the quiet south of Misool are the best-known sights. For Indian families the sensible approach is to choose one base, add one or two boat days, and keep the rest of the schedule loose, because weather and sea conditions decide what is possible.
It is a poor fit for people who dislike small boats, need frequent medical care or want a varied menu. Vegetarian and Jain food can be managed with warning and simple dishes, but we found no verified pure-vegetarian or Indian restaurant here. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential.
