Before you go
Rohet with elderly parents: what to know
- Treat Rohet as one base, not a circuit. Choose one outing a day, one in the cool early morning, and rest in the middle of the day.
- The road from Jodhpur is straightforward but rural, and sometimes shared with livestock; ask your driver to avoid driving after dark.
- Skip horse riding if balance or knees are an issue; the stables, the lake walk and a car-based village loop give the same sense of place.
- Jeep seats are firm and the ground is uneven. Ask for a car instead of an open jeep if your back is delicate.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen on every outing; shade is limited away from the hotel garden.
- Carry any regular medicines with you. There is little in Rohet beyond the hotel, and Jodhpur has the nearest full hospitals.
Easiest first
Places in Rohet sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Bishnoi village visits (Culture and craft · Half a day) — Mostly seated in a vehicle with short walks on uneven village ground and low doorways. Heat and dust can tire; a car is more comfortable than an open jeep.
- Guda Bishnoi lake and conservation reserve (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Mostly level ground and viewing from near a car or the bank, with little shade; carry water and a hat. Dust and heat outside winter are tiring.
- Khejarli memorial (day trip) (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — A flat site with short walks between the memorial, temple and trees. Shade is limited; carry water and a hat.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Marwari horse riding at Rohet (Sports · 1 to 3 hours for a ride; longer for multi-day itineraries) — Mounting and riding need balance, leg strength and comfort in the saddle; this is not suitable for those with hip, knee or back trouble. The stables, horses and a short walk are an easy alternative for non-riders.

Practical tips for Rohet
- Heat. Summer highs in this part of Marwar are punishing from April to June. Do outdoor activity at dawn or late afternoon and rest through midday.
- Getting there. Arrange a pick-up from Jodhpur Airport or station through the hotel or a trusted driver. The road is about an hour, and public transport from Jodhpur is not practical for visitors.
- Money. Carry some cash for village tea, tips and crafts. ATMs are scarce in Rohet, so withdraw in Jodhpur before you come.
- Dress. Light cotton, a hat and closed shoes for riding or jeep safaris. Dress modestly in villages and at temples, and cover your shoulders and knees.
- Village etiquette. Ask before photographing people or their homes, especially women. Keep to paths and do not feed or chase wildlife; Bishnoi communities take animal protection seriously.
- Wildlife viewing. Blackbuck and chinkara are most active in early morning and late afternoon. Cranes are seasonal in the cooler months; ask your host what is around before you go out.
- Photography. Landscapes, horses and birds are fine to photograph. Check rules before photographing inside temples or museums at Mehrangarh and Mandore.
- Book ahead. There are few places to stay in the village itself, so book ahead for October to March. Check transfer and meal arrangements when you reserve.
