With parents at Sankagiri Fort: Not recommended for anyone with knee, heart or balance problems. Pacing
Pacing a Salem trip for parents and children
- Plan one major outing a day and leave the afternoon for rest; Salem is hot from March to June.
- The city temples are level and short, but floors are stone and bare feet are required, so go in the cooler hours.
- Sankagiri Fort is a long climb with no handrail; older travellers should skip it or enjoy the view from below.
- Hire a car and driver for Mettur, Sankari and Attur, since public transport to the forts is limited.
- Carry water and a hat when visiting the lakes, zoo and fort sites, where shade can be limited.
- Heat: March to June is hot, with afternoon highs near 37 degrees. Plan outdoor sights for the early morning and rest after lunch.
