The short answer

Mookaneri Lake: what visitors should know first

Go for a calm early-morning walk and a bird-watching hour. It is not a major sight, but it is easy, free to look at and a good break from temples.

History and context

The story behind Mookaneri Lake

The lake lies at Kannankurichi, fed by rain and streams from the Yercaud hills. A citizens' group began restoring it in 2010, building 47 islands from excavated clay and planting them with trees. Birdwatchers have asked for sanctuary status, and pollution from festival idol immersion is an ongoing concern.

Why it matters

Why Mookaneri Lake is worth your time

Mookaneri is a rare case of a city lake that was restored by citizens rather than lost. The Salem Citizen's Forum cleaned and rebuilt it from 2010, and the islands were made from the excavated lake clay. Today it recharges groundwater, supports fishermen and offers a birding site inside the city limits.

That makes it more useful than its fame suggests. For a traveller it is a quiet counterpoint to temples and forts, and for bird watchers it is one of the easiest places near Salem to see a long list of species. Over 169 species have been recorded, though numbers vary by season.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach the lake at sunrise if you can, when the birds are active and the light is soft. The lake covers about 58 acres and has 47 man-made islands planted with trees, which give the birds roosting sites. Walk the embankment slowly with binoculars and look for egrets, kingfishers and, in the right season, migrants such as garganey and pintail.

The lake has a walking path, seating, flower beds and a children's play area, which make it an easy stop with older relatives. Coracles, the traditional round boats, are used by local fishermen and have been offered for trips to the islands, but check availability on the day.

Avoid the weeks around Vinayaka Chaturthi, when idol immersion can foul the water and bring large crowds. Take water, a hat and a camera, and pair the lake with the Shevaroy foothills drive or a late breakfast in the city.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go at dawn for birds and cooler air
  • Bring binoculars and water
  • Avoid the Vinayaka Chaturthi period
  • Check whether boat rides are running
