The short answer
Kalvarayan Hills: what visitors should know first
A full-day drive from Salem for people who like empty hills and village life rather than sights. There is no booked trek route; the waterfalls flow mainly after the monsoon, and paths to them are rough. Go between July and February.
History and context

Why it matters
Why Kalvarayan Hills is worth your time
The Kalvarayan Hills cover about 1,095 sq km and, with the Pachaimalai, Javadi and Shevaroy hills, separate the Kaveri and Palar river basins. Deciduous forest and patches of shola grow on the higher plateaus.
Until 1976 the hills were run under a jagir system by tribal chieftains, and much of the range is still remote. A respectful visit, with care for the villages and forests, gives a glimpse of a part of Tamil Nadu that most travellers never see.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Hire a car from Salem for the day; the hills lie about 70 km away, and Kallakurichi, about 56 km away, is the nearest town on the eastern side. The Gomukhi Dam sits at the foot of the hills and makes an easy first stop.
The range has two parts: the Chinna (little) Kalvarayans in the north, averaging about 820 m (2,700 ft), and the Periya (big) Kalvarayans in the south, averaging about 1,220 m (4,000 ft). Megam Falls and Periyar Falls are the best known of the waterfalls, and both depend on rain; outside the wet months they may be dry. Upper roads can be narrow and rough, so travel with a local driver who knows them.
There is a botanical park and a summer festival in May, when the hills are busiest. At other times you may meet few visitors. Carry food and water, as facilities are basic, and leave the hills before dark.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
