Salem is a busy industrial city in northwestern Tamil Nadu, set in a basin between the Shevaroy and other hills. It is better known for steel, sago, handlooms and mangoes than for tourism, and that is part of its appeal: the temples, lakes and forts here are visited mainly by local families, so a trip feels unhurried and unstaged.
The city centre holds older shrines such as Sugavaneswarar and Kottai Mariamman, a street-snack culture built around the thattu vadai set, and the Thirumanimuthar river running through the old fort area. Within an hour or so by road you can reach Mookaneri Lake, the zoo at the foot of the Shevaroys, and the Kaveri dam at Mettur. Further out are two hill and river forts, Sankagiri and Attur, that most travellers skip.
Salem is also the gateway to Yercaud, the hill station about 20 km away, which has its own guide on Raahzo. Most visitors use Salem as a base for a night or two, either on the way between Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Chennai or as a quieter starting point for the Shevaroy Hills. With a car and driver, a gentle pace and a midday rest, it works well for families and older travellers.
