History and context

The story behind Moragad (Mora Fort)

Moragad, Mulher and Hargad are three citadels on one plateau in the Dolbari range. Mulher was the capital of the Bagul clan's kingdom of Baglan, and the Marathas captured it in 1672. Detailed dates for Moragad itself are not well documented in published sources.

Why it matters

Why Moragad (Mora Fort) is worth your time

Moragad forms a trio with Mulher and Hargad on a shared plateau, and the three together once guarded the capital of Baglan. Moragad is the most remote and the least visited of the group, which preserves a sense of discovery that busier forts such as Salher have lost, and it rewards those who prepare well.

The ruins are modest, but the rock-cut tanks, gates and stone wall linking Mulher and Mora show how the plateau was fortified as one system.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Moragad is reached from Mulher. A paved road leads to the base of Mulher Fort and a dirt path goes up past three gates to the Someshwar temple, then onward to a saddle where a stone wall with three bastions joins Mulher and Mora. From the base to the saddle takes about two hours.

From the saddle you climb crumbling steps to the first east-facing gate, with rock-cut stairs and carved idols, and then reach a large rock-cut tank. A second gate lies on a cliff edge and needs a side path. A third older path is reported to be lost and dangerous, so use only the established routes and go with someone who knows the mountain.

On top, the plateau of around ten acres has a collapsed granary, several rock-cut tanks (only one with clean drinking water), a Shiva linga in a large reservoir and ruined house foundations. Allow about an hour on the summit, and carry all the water you need.
