The short answer

Mulher Fort: what visitors should know first

Visit for a quieter, history-led fort day with several gates and a temple on the way. It suits fit walkers with an early start, and the lodging in the village is minimal, so plan food and water in advance.

History and context

The story behind Mulher Fort

The Rashtrauda dynasty of the Bagul clan ruled Baglan from 1310 to 1638 with Mulher as its capital, before the Mughals took control. After the Marathas relieved the siege of Salher, they captured Mulher in February 1672, an event reported in published accounts; one earlier attack had failed.

Several large cannon were once reported at the fort, and one was moved to the Someshwar Mahadev temple in 2022. The dates in some accounts are not fully sourced and should be treated with care.

Why it matters

Why Mulher Fort is worth your time

Mulher was the capital of Baglan under the Rashtrauda dynasty of the Bagul clan, who are said to have ruled from 1310 to 1638. It later passed to the Mughals, and in February 1672 Moropant and Prataprao captured it after the Maratha victory at Salher, bringing the Baglan region under Swarajya.

The fort is far less visited than Salher, which gives it a quiet character. It is a good place to see a local capital's walls, gates and cisterns without crowds.

How to experience it

Mulher is reached via Satana and Taharabad, with the village lying about 9 km west of Taharabad on State Highway 14. A paved road leads to the base of the fort, then a dirt path passes three gates and a Ganesh temple on Mulher Machi, the lower terrace. From there the path climbs to the Someshwar temple and on to the saddle between Mulher and Moragad.

On the fort you will find rock-cut cisterns holding drinking water, the Someshwar Mahadev temple and a cannon moved there in 2022. The village below has old carved mansions and a temple on a small hill, and the area was once a trading town known for its coinage.

There are no hotels in the village, so most visitors come for the day. Carry water and food, wear shoes with grip, and ask villagers for the path, as signposts are few.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
