Salher is a fort and a small hill settlement in Satana taluka, in the north of Nashik district, in the Dolbari range of the Sahyadri. It is best known for Salher Fort, at about 1,567 m the highest fort in the Sahyadri and, in 2025, part of the UNESCO listing Maratha Military Landscapes of India. In 1672 the Marathas won the Battle of Salher here against a Mughal army, in open ground.
The trek is the reason to come. Rock-cut stairways, gateways and cisterns climb through the cliff to a summit with a temple of Parshuram, and the neighbouring Salota fort adds a second summit and views across the range. Further east, Mulher and Moragad form a quieter three-fort cluster around the old capital of Baglan.
This is a destination for trekkers and for people who like history without crowds. Facilities are minimal: the villages are small, there are no hotels at the forts, and water must be carried. Most visitors base themselves in Satana or Nashik and drive in for the day.
The best months are October to February, when the air is cool and the steps are dry. Older travellers can enjoy the villages, the temples at the base and the drive through the hills, but the summit climbs should be left to fit walkers.
