Plan 01

1 day in Sankri

  1. 01

Day 1: Village and forest edge

If you reach Sankri by early afternoon, spend the rest of the day on a slow walk through the village lanes and a short stroll into the pine forest above it. Check your permit and guide arrangements, and rest early to adjust to the altitude. A full single day is only practical as a break in a longer journey, because the road from Dehradun takes most of a day.

Plan 02

2 days in Sankri

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and acclimatise

Drive in from Dehradun or Purola, check into a homestay, drink plenty of water and walk the village lanes at a gentle pace. Arrange permits and a registered guide through your host.

  2. 02

Day 2: Forest walk or Naitwar

Walk toward the Kedarkantha trail for a few kilometres to feel the forest and altitude, or drive down the valley to the Karna temple near Naitwar and the Tons river. Return to Sankri for the evening.

Plan 03

3 days in Sankri

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive

Arrive from Dehradun, settle in and walk the lanes. Confirm permits and guide.

  2. 02

Day 2: Osla and the Supin valley

Travel by the rough track toward Gangad if the road is open, then walk the 3.5 to 4 km up to Osla village to see the Someshwar temple. Return to Sankri by evening or stay in a homestay.

  3. 03

Day 3: Kedarkantha forest or Naitwar

Walk the first section of the Kedarkantha trail toward Juda Ka Talab, or drive down to Naitwar for the Karna temple, and return to Sankri before the cold evening.

Pacing

Pacing a Sankri trip for parents and children

  • Allow a full day for the road from Dehradun and break the journey at Purola or Mussoorie if parents tire easily.
  • Spend a night at Sankri before any trek; at about 1,950 m, altitude can cause headaches and poor sleep in the first night.
  • Carry cash from Purola or Mori, plus regular medicines and a basic first aid kit, as there are no medical facilities nearby.
  • Pack warm layers in all seasons; evenings are cold even in May, and January and February bring snow.
  • Choose short forest walks or a visit to Naitwar rather than a full trek unless fitness and medical clearance are good.
  • Keep a driver and a plan for road closures, which can occur in monsoon and after heavy snow.
