The short answer

Diu Fort & Nagoa Beach: what visitors should know first

Worth it, but plan it as an overnight rather than a rushed single day given the roughly 100 km distance each way from Sasan Gir. The fort rewards an hour or two of unhurried walking, and Nagoa beach is a pleasant, easy stop afterward.

History and context

The story behind Diu Fort & Nagoa Beach

The Sultan of Gujarat ceded Diu to the Portuguese in 1535 in exchange for military support against the Mughal emperor Humayun, and the fort was built that year, with major reinforcement completed by 1546 under Dom João de Castro. Portuguese rule continued for more than four centuries until Indian forces took the island in Operation Vijay on 19 December 1961.

Why it matters

Why Diu Fort & Nagoa Beach is worth your time

Diu is one of the clearest surviving examples of Portuguese colonial architecture on India's west coast, and its fort is the centrepiece of that legacy: built specifically to secure a strategic alliance, then held for over four centuries while the surrounding Gujarat coast changed hands repeatedly under other powers. Its continuity, right up to 1961, makes it a useful counterpoint to the Mughal and Rajput forts more commonly seen elsewhere in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

For a Sasan Gir-based trip, Diu also offers something the forest itself cannot: open sea, a different pace and a genuinely distinct colonial-era townscape, which is why many travellers treat it as a short coastal break rather than squeezing it into the wildlife-focused part of their itinerary.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The double moat and bastions

One moat is tidal, and several bastions still hold old cannons, giving a strong sense of the fort's original defensive design.

  2. 02

    The lighthouse

A working lighthouse stands at one end of the fortress, a useful landmark and a reminder of the island's maritime importance.

  3. 03

    Nagoa Beach nearby

A short drive from the fort, Nagoa offers calmer water and a more developed beach stretch for an easy swim or walk.

How to experience it

Diu Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1535 and substantially reinforced by 1546, part of a deal in which the Sultan of Gujarat ceded the island in exchange for Portuguese military support against the Mughals. What survives today is a sandstone fortress with a double moat, one tidal, several bastions still carrying old cannons, three gates and a lighthouse at one end, kept in reasonable repair despite partial ruin in places. A permanent bridge connects it to the rest of the island, and well-kept gardens line some of the internal pathways.

The fort remained under Portuguese control for more than four centuries, longer than almost anywhere else in India, until it was taken by Indian forces in December 1961. That long, separate colonial history still shows in Diu's wider character, from its architecture to its relaxed, slightly different pace compared with mainland Gujarat.

Most visitors pair the fort with Nagoa beach, a short drive away, known for calmer water and a more developed stretch of sand than most of the island's coastline, good for an easy walk or a simple swim to round off the visit.
