Sasan Gir is a small forest settlement at the edge of Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat's dry-deciduous forest and the last wild home of the Asiatic lion. The park was carved out of the former Nawab of Junagadh's hunting reserve and formally protected from 1965, at a time when only a few dozen lions survived here. The most recent census, in 2025, counted 891 Asiatic lions across Gujarat, with roughly 394 of them inside Gir National Park and its adjoining sanctuaries; the rest have spread into agricultural land and smaller sanctuaries across Saurashtra.
Most visits are built around two or three safari drives, spaced across a single night or two, since one morning run rarely feels enough and a second or third improves the odds of a sighting. Mornings start before sunrise at a forest department permit gate, and afternoons are quieter, used for a dam, a dam-side bird walk or simply resting through the heat. There is no town to wander in the way Jaipur or Udaipur have old cities; Sasan is a village of lodges, dhabas and a railway halt, and the pace is set entirely by safari timings.
The sanctuary closes every year from 16 June to 15 October for the monsoon, when the Hiran and other rivers are in spate and tracks become unsafe for vehicles. Outside that window, winter mornings (December to February) are cold enough for a jacket in an open jeep, while March to mid-June is hot and dry, which is paradoxically the best season for sightings because animals concentrate near the remaining waterholes.
Families and older travellers generally manage Sasan Gir well, since the safari itself needs no walking, only tolerance for an early start and a bumpy, open vehicle. The wider region adds a pilgrimage layer: Somnath's Jyotirlinga temple, the Jain and Hindu shrines of Girnar hill, and forest shrines such as Kankai Mata and Tulsishyam, all within a half-day's drive, make Gir as much a base for Saurashtra's temples as for its lions.

Sasan Gir itinerary
One good day
1 day in Sasan Gir
If you only have a single day, book the earliest possible morning jeep safari into the main Gir Jungle Trail zones and allow close to three hours for the drive, briefing and return. Rest and have breakfast once you're back, then spend the afternoon at Kamleshwar Dam for a quieter look at birdlife and the reservoir that sustains the forest through the dry months. If time allows before you leave, stop at the Crocodile Breeding Centre near Sasan, which needs only 30–45 minutes.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days in Sasan Gir
Arrive the previous evening if possible, since permits are released for fixed morning and afternoon slots and an early start matters. Take a morning safari in one of the Gir Jungle Trail zones, rest through the middle of the day, then visit the Crocodile Breeding Centre and Kamleshwar Dam in the afternoon. If you are travelling with children or want a near-certain lion sighting, consider swapping one jeep safari for a visit to Devalia Safari Park instead.
Day-by-day plan →Three unhurried days
3 days in Sasan Gir
Settle in the evening before, then take an early morning safari in the Gir Jungle Trail. Spend the afternoon at Kamleshwar Dam and the Crocodile Breeding Centre, both easy, low-walking stops that suit any age.
