The short answer
Gir National Park Safari (Gir Jungle Trail): what visitors should know first
Yes, this is the reason most people come to Sasan Gir, but go in with realistic expectations: it is a genuine wild forest, not a zoo, so a lion sighting depends on season, zone and luck. Book at least two drives if you can, and choose the coolest available slot.
History and context
The story behind Gir National Park Safari (Gir Jungle Trail)
The forest was a private hunting reserve of the Nawabs of Junagadh before independence, and it was the Nawab's own restrictions on lion hunting in the early twentieth century, after their numbers fell to barely a dozen, that kept the population alive long enough for formal protection. Gir was declared a wildlife sanctuary and later a national park, with the core protected area notified in 1965, and has been the subject of lion census counts roughly every five years since.

Why it matters
Why Gir National Park Safari (Gir Jungle Trail) is worth your time
Gir is the last place on the planet where Asiatic lions survive in the wild, a subspecies once common from the Mediterranean to eastern India and reduced, by the start of the twentieth century, to a last handful here in Gujarat. Protection began under the Nawab of Junagadh and continued after independence, with the sanctuary formally established in 1965; the most recent 2025 census counted 891 lions across Gujarat, with roughly 394 of them inside Gir National Park and its adjoining sanctuaries.
Beyond the lions, the safari is also the clearest way to see Gir's wider ecosystem: leopards, striped hyenas, four-horned antelope and over 300 recorded bird species share the same dry deciduous forest, India's largest tract of this habitat type in the west of the country. Seeing it from a jeep, guided by someone trained to read the forest, gives a far better sense of how the lions actually live than any enclosure could.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
A working wild forest
Unlike an enclosed park, every sighting here is unscripted; guides track pug marks and deer alarm calls rather than following a known animal.
- 02
More than lions
Leopards, striped hyenas, chinkara, marsh crocodiles and a large resident and migratory bird population share the same forest.
- 03
Dry teak and sal forest
The terrain itself, open-canopied and criss-crossed by seasonal streams, is the largest remaining tract of this forest type in western India.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
A Gir safari begins before dawn at the permit gate in Sasan, where your allotted zone, vehicle and guide are confirmed against your booking. The park is divided into several numbered tourism zones, each covering a different stretch of forest, and you are assigned one rather than choosing freely, which is why booking two or three separate drives improves your odds of a varied experience rather than seeing the same stretch of track twice.
Once inside, the pace is slow and watchful. Your guide reads pug marks, calls and the behaviour of spotted deer and sambar for clues to where a lion, leopard or hyena might be resting. Sightings are never guaranteed, and a drive with no lion at all is a real possibility, though many visitors see at least one lion, often resting in the shade rather than moving, across two or three attempts. The dry teak forest itself, with its open sal-and-teak canopy, termite mounds and seasonal streams, is worth watching even between animal sightings.
For older travellers or anyone who finds the bumpy jeep tiring, a single well-timed morning drive, taken on the coolest available day, is usually enough; for families or committed wildlife watchers, spreading bookings across two mornings and an afternoon gives a noticeably better sense of the forest.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Book permits online well ahead, especially for winter weekends
- Dress in muted colours and bring a blanket for cold morning starts
- Carry water and sunscreen even in winter; shade inside the jeep is limited
- Keep noise down and avoid flash photography so as not to disturb wildlife or other visitors
- Book at least two drives if you want a realistic chance of a lion sighting
Know before you go
Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Multiple forest zones radiating from the Sasan Gir permit gate
- Time needed
- About 3 hours door to door, including briefing, travel to the zone and the drive itself
- Best time
- The first morning slot of the day, year-round; March to mid-June often has the best sightings near waterholes despite the heat
- Walking level
- Easy
- Senior comfort
- No walking is required; you are seated in the jeep throughout. The vehicle itself is a converted open jeep with firm bench seats, no suspension to speak of, and no seatbelts, so a cushion, a blanket for cold mornings and a firm grip on the roll bar make the three hours far more comfortable.
- Tickets and access
- Safari permits are issued through the Gujarat Forest Department's official online booking system for fixed morning and afternoon slots, with a registered guide compulsory in every vehicle. Book as early as possible; winter weekends and holiday periods sell out well in advance.

Is a lion sighting guaranteed on a Gir safari?
No. This is a genuine wild forest rather than an enclosure, so sightings depend on season, the zone you are allotted and simple luck. Booking two or three drives improves your odds considerably.
How long does a Gir safari take?
Budget about three hours in total, including the briefing at the permit gate, the drive to your allotted zone and the safari itself.
Can elderly travellers manage a Gir safari?
Yes, since no walking is involved, but the open jeep has firm seats and no suspension. A cushion, a blanket for cold mornings and a single well-timed drive rather than several back-to-back ones usually works best.
