Before you go

Sasan Gir with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book the earliest available safari slot; later morning drives are warmer and the jeep's open sides make early starts genuinely cold in winter, so bring a jacket and a blanket.
  • The safari vehicle is a converted jeep with hard bench seats and no suspension to speak of; a cushion and a firm grip on the roll bar make a real difference over three hours.
  • There is very little walking required anywhere in Sasan Gir itself; the sanctuary, Devalia Safari Park and the Crocodile Breeding Centre are all seen from, or close to, a vehicle.
  • Carry water, sunscreen and a hat for daytime stops even in winter; shade is limited at dam viewpoints and the crocodile centre's open enclosures.
  • If a second safari feels like too much, Devalia Safari Park offers a calmer, shorter alternative with a far higher chance of seeing a lion, since the animals are within a fenced enclosure.
  • Mobile network coverage is patchy in the forest; download anything you need and tell your lodge your return time before a safari.

Easiest first

Places in Sasan Gir sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (10)

  • Crocodile Breeding Centre, Sasan (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — Paths between the enclosures are flat and short, with no significant walking distance. Shade is limited around some of the open ponds, so a hat is worth carrying even for a brief visit.
  • Devalia Safari Park (Gir Interpretation Zone) (Places to visit · 45–75 minutes for the bus or jeep circuit) — You remain seated for the entire visit, in either a shared bus or a jeep, with a shorter and generally smoother circuit than the main safari. It suits anyone who wants to see a lion without committing to a full three-hour jungle drive.
  • Gir National Park Safari (Gir Jungle Trail) (Places to visit · About 3 hours door to door, including briefing, travel to the zone and the drive itself) — No walking is required; you are seated in the jeep throughout. The vehicle itself is a converted open jeep with firm bench seats, no suspension to speak of, and no seatbelts, so a cushion, a blanket for cold mornings and a firm grip on the roll bar make the three hours far more comfortable.
  • Hotel Gir Kathiyawadi (Food and restaurants · 45–60 minutes for a full thali meal) — Seating is simple table-and-chair dining rather than floor seating, with no stairs involved, making it an easy stop for most travellers. The thali is served in rounds with refills, so there is no need to over-order at the start.
  • Jambur Village (Siddi Dhamal) (Culture and craft · 30–60 minutes) — The village itself requires minimal walking, and any performance typically takes place in a seated, open setting. The main consideration is arranging a respectful, guided visit rather than any physical demand.
  • Kamleshwar Dam (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — The main viewpoint is reached by a short, level walk from where vehicles park, with no steps involved. There is little shade, so a hat and water are worth carrying even for a short visit.
  • Kankai Mata & Banej Temples (Places of worship · Half a day, including the drive in and out) — Both shrines are reached by vehicle, with only short walks at the site itself, but the distance and restricted access mean the visit involves a long day in a car over forest tracks rather than a quick stop.
  • Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive; longer if the forest office arranges a visit) — Where access is allowed it is normally from a vehicle on forest tracks, so there is little walking. Roads to the edge of the sanctuary can be rough, facilities are minimal and shade and toilets are scarce, so older travellers should keep this short and well supplied.
  • Pania Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2–3 hours on site, plus a long drive) — The terrain is hilly but visits are normally by vehicle on forest tracks, so there is little walking. The area is dry with no natural water source, shade is scarce and facilities are minimal, so carry water and avoid the hot months.
  • Tulsishyam Temple & Hot Springs (Places of worship · 30–60 minutes) — The temple and kunds are reached by short, level paths from the parking area, with no significant climbing. Stone surfaces near the hottest kund can be warm underfoot, so footwear is worth keeping on.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Diu Fort & Nagoa Beach (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for the fort; a half-day including Nagoa beach) — The fort's main pathways are level, but ramparts and bastions involve some uneven stone and occasional steps with limited railings; many visitors are content exploring the lower courtyards and gardens without climbing every bastion. Nagoa beach itself is flat and easy, though sand walking can be tiring for some.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Sasan Gir

  • Safari permits. Book jeep safari permits online through the Gujarat Forest Department's portal as early as you can; popular winter dates and weekends sell out. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the sanctuary without a permit and a registered guide.
  • Cold mornings, hot afternoons. Winter safari starts can feel close to freezing in an open jeep even though daytime temperatures are mild; layer up and remove layers as the sun rises. By March, the same jeep is hot and dusty by mid-morning.
  • Getting around. There is no local public transport worth relying on. Arrange a car and driver for the whole stay, since safari gates, the dam and day-trip towns are all spread out along forest roads.
  • Money. Carry cash for small dhabas, local guides and forest department incidentals; card and UPI acceptance is inconsistent outside larger lodges.
  • Dress and gear. Wear muted colours for safaris rather than bright clothing, and bring a hat, sunscreen and binoculars if you have them. A basic zoom lens helps far more than a wide-angle one for wildlife photography.
  • Closures. The sanctuary is shut every year from 16 June to 15 October for the monsoon. Confirm Devalia Safari Park's current timings separately, since its hours shift with the season.
  • Photography. Flash photography and loud behaviour inside the sanctuary are discouraged and can affect other visitors' sightings. Ask your guide before photographing Maldhari herders or Siddi residents you may encounter.
