The short answer
Pania Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go only if you are already exploring Gir's eastern side and want to see dry-country wildlife. Chinkara are the draw; lions only pass through. The published season is October to June, but fees and rules are not published, so check with the forest office first.
History and context
The story behind Pania Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary was notified in June 1989 and is managed by the Gujarat Forest Department. It forms part of the wider Gir conservation area, which also includes the national park and other surrounding sanctuaries.
Gujarat Tourism describes Gir as its southern and eastern boundary, with the Chanchai hills to the north-west. Lions and leopards use it, though its chinkara are the best-known resident.

Why it matters
Why Pania Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Pania shows the dry, hilly side of the Gir landscape, quite unlike the teak and acacia forest around Sasan. It is one of the sanctuaries that surrounds the core park and acts as a buffer and movement route for the animals leaving it.
For visitors it offers a chance to see chinkara in open country and to understand that Gir is a wider ecosystem than the national park alone. It is a quiet, low-key stop, best treated as an extension for people who have time and are interested in the less-visited parts of the lion's range.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Chinkara in open country
The gazelles roam more freely here than in Gir's wooded interior, and are the sanctuary's best-known residents.
- 02
Hills and dry grassland
Moderate hills and grass-covered slopes give long views, quite unlike Gir's forest.
- 03
Gir's outer edge
Lions and leopards pass through from the adjoining forest, which makes every sighting a bonus.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Pania, also called Chanchai-Pania, sits on the outer edge of the Gir forest, with Gir forming its southern and eastern boundary and the Chanchai hills to the north-west. The nearest bus stop and railway station is Visavadar, about 10 km away. Rajkot airport is about 150 km, so most visitors come by hired car as part of a wider Gir trip.
The landscape differs from Sasan. It is arid, with grass and moderate hills and no natural water source, and it supports chinkara (Indian gazelle) more freely than the wooded parts of Gir. Lions and leopards visit from the neighbouring forest but are not the reason to come. Plan a morning or late-afternoon visit, when the gazelles are moving and the light is gentler.
Because tourist arrangements are not published, speak to the forest department first. Ask whether private vehicles are allowed, whether a guide is needed and which tracks are open. Do not step into restricted forest on your own: the department fines trespass in lion areas.
