Plan 01

1 day in Satkosia

  1. 01

Day 1: Tikarpada and the gorge

Leave Angul or Bhubaneswar early enough to be at the Pampasar forest gate soon after it opens, and carry your permission or booking details. Drive on to Tikarpada, about half an hour beyond, and start with the gorge viewpoint while the light is soft. Visit the interpretation centre and the gharial research unit, then take a river trip if boats are running. Have an early lunch, walk the short trails near the camp if the heat allows, and leave in good time, because the forest has a set closing time in the evening and the drive out takes a while.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Satkosia

  1. 01

Day 1: Tikarpada and the Mahanadi

Reach Tikarpada by mid-morning, see the gorge viewpoint, the interpretation centre and the gharial unit, and book a river trip. Spend the afternoon watching the sandbars for gharials, mugger crocodiles and river birds, and rest through the hottest hours. Stay overnight in a forest-department camp, if you have booked one, and take a short evening walk.

    Day 2: Purunakote and back

Drive up to the hilltop at Purunakote, which is a short run from Tikarpada, to see the grassland and, with luck, deer grazing in the early light. Return to Tikarpada for breakfast and a last look at the river, then head back towards Angul. If you are travelling with parents, keep the drive out for the afternoon when you have had a rest.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Purunakote: Reached by a forest road, so the effort is the drive more than the walk. Ground is uneven, and shade is limited. Carry water and sit in the vehicle if the heat is high.

Plan 03

3 days in Satkosia

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrive on the Angul side

Drive from Bhubaneswar or Angul via the Pampasar gate to Tikarpada. After lunch visit the gorge viewpoint, interpretation centre and gharial unit, and take an easy walk by the river.

  2. 02

Day 2: Chhotkei and the forest

Drive to Chhotkei, about half an hour from Tikarpada, and spend the day at the community-run nature camp with its walking paths. Watch for elephant signs and birds, and keep your pace slow.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Out via Nayagarh

Leave towards Nayagarh and Badamul, where river cruises on the Mahanadi run from the southern side. On the way to Bhubaneswar you can stop at the Nilamadhab temple at Kantilo, on the Mahanadi in Nayagarh district. Check road and boat conditions before committing to this crossing.

Pacing

Pacing a Satkosia trip for parents and children

  • Keep to the Tikarpada gorge viewpoint, the interpretation centre and a boat trip; they involve little walking and plenty of sitting.
  • Plan the drive in daylight and leave the forest well before the gate closing time, which is enforced; do not leave the exit to the last hour.
  • Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit, because the nearest good hospital is in Angul or Bhubaneswar, a long drive away.
  • Avoid April and May if heat troubles you; November to February is far kinder, though mornings on the water can be cool.
  • Book camps and permits ahead and carry printouts, as mobile signal can be patchy in the gorge.
  • Ask staff about boat entry: some embarkation points involve a few steps or a soft sand bank, and you may want a steadying hand.
