Why it matters

Why Surwaya Garhi is worth your time

Surwaya was a significant Shaiva centre. A monastery called Shankhamatha, linked to the Mattamayura Shaiva sect, was established here in the 8th century CE, and the town was later named Sarasvatipattana in a 13th-century inscription. Most of the monuments in the garhi are generally dated to the 10th century.

The site was reported in 1915 by D R Bhandarkar and conserved from 1916 under M B Garde. Dating of the surrounding fortification is disputed: the monastery was turned into a small fortress in the late 13th or early 14th century according to one account, while the ASI dates the enclosure to the 16th–17th century. Several inscription slabs are now in the Gujari Mahal Museum, Gwalior.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Surwaya as a quiet architecture visit. The enclosure is called the garhi, and inside it you can walk among a monastery, three small temples and a stepwell. Start with the matha in the north-west corner: it is built of well-dressed stone laid without mortar, with a pillared courtyard and doorframes carved with foliage and Ganesha on the lintels.

Then visit the temples. Temple No. 1 faces west and its doorway has a large Vishnu on Garuda, although Shaiva door guardians suggest it was a Shiva shrine. Temple No. 2 faces east and has an Andhakantaka Shiva in a niche. The stepwell has an Anantasayana Vishnu on its back wall.

No guide is usually on site, so read about the layout beforehand. Keep your visit short and take water and a hat.
