The short answer
Narwar Fort: what visitors should know first
Go only if you like ruins and have a car. The fort is a half-day trip, large and partly dilapidated, with uneven ground. It is rewarding for history lovers and tiring for anyone expecting restored palaces.
History and context
The story behind Narwar Fort
The fort overlooks the Sindh river. Sources differ on the founding dynasty and period; Britannica places Kachwaha, Parihar and Tomar rule from the 12th century, and some sources say earlier. Narwar fell to the Marathas under Sindhia in the early 19th century and is now under ASI renovation.

Why it matters
Why Narwar Fort is worth your time
Narwar is among the older fortified sites in the region. Tradition identifies it with Nalapura, the capital of King Nala, whose love story with Damayanti appears in the Mahabharata and later literature. Whether or not you accept the legend, the site was a strategic stronghold held successively by Rajput dynasties, the Mughals and, in the early 19th century, the Scindias of Gwalior.
It also has a place in 1857 history. In 1859 Man Singh Kachwaha, the local raja, betrayed Tatya Tope to the British, which led to Tope's capture and trial at Shivpuri. That link makes a visit to Narwar a useful companion to the memorial in Shivpuri town.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Narwar as a half-day with a driver. The fort stands on a hill on the eastern bank of the Sindh river, and the drive from Shivpuri takes the better part of an hour. Start early. Park near the lower gates and walk up only as far as the ground allows. Gates, water tanks and the ruined palaces give you a sense of scale without needing to cover every corner.
Look at the architecture of the surviving palaces, which show Rajput features such as flat ceilings, fluted columns and multifold arches. One account suggests that in its prime Narwar was second only to Gwalior Fort in grandeur. Today it is dilapidated, so the pleasure is atmospheric rather than polished.
Take water, a hat and sturdy shoes. If you are short of energy, view the fort from the road and visit the lakes near the town instead. Return to Shivpuri by afternoon.
