Shivpuri is a small town in north-western Madhya Pradesh, about 120 km from Gwalior and about 100 km from Jhansi. Its earliest recorded mention is of Akbar hunting elephants here in 1564, when it was called Sipri. In 1804 the Scindias took it and made it their summer capital, and that royal past still shapes what you see: marble cenotaphs in a formal garden, a colonial-era lodge on a forest hill and reservoirs made for hunting parties.
The town works best as a gentle one- or two-day stop, not a headline destination. Madhav National Park sits right beside the town and gives you lakes, dry forest, deer and birds without a long drive. The Scindia Chhatris are the finest monument in town. For history, Shivpuri is also where the 1857 commander Tatya Tope was tried and hanged in April 1859, and the ruined Narwar Fort lies about 41 km away.
It is easy for older travellers if you keep expectations modest. Most sights in town are flat and short, the park is done from a vehicle, and the pace is slow. Summer heat is severe, so come between November and February, and plan outdoor visits for early morning. Facilities are limited compared with Gwalior or Orchha, so book a hotel in advance and carry water and snacks.
