Before you go

Shivpuri with elderly parents: what to know

  • Do outdoor sights before 10 am between March and October; the afternoons are hot and tiring.
  • The Scindia Chhatris and Bhadaiya Kund are flat and short; Narwar Fort and rural temples involve uneven ground and few places to sit.
  • Hire a car and driver for the day; autos are fine in town but not for the park or day trips.
  • Book accommodation in advance and ask about ground-floor rooms; lifts are not guaranteed.
  • Carry water, snacks, a hat and any medicines; services outside town are limited.
  • Confirm opening hours and fees locally; some are not published online.

Easiest first

Places in Shivpuri sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Bhadaiya Kund (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The area is mostly level with a few steps to the kund. The ground can be slippery in the monsoon, so wear shoes with grip. Seating and shade are informal.
  • George Castle (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The castle is reached by vehicle, and the area around it is largely level. There may be a few steps to the terrace or entrance. Shade and seating are limited, so bring water.
  • Madhav National Park (Places to visit · Half a day) — Most of the experience is from a vehicle, so walking is minimal. Seats in open jeeps are bouncy on rough tracks, and there is little shade on foot. Choose a vehicle with good seats and keep a cushion handy if you have back trouble.
  • Sakhya Sagar and the Sailing Club (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — Paths near the lake are mostly level. Seating is limited, and shade is patchy, so bring a hat. Boat boarding, if available, may involve a few steps from the jetty.
  • Scindia Chhatris (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The garden paths and tank-side promenade are level and the pace is slow. Shade is limited in the middle of the day, and seating is patchy, so carry water and a hat. The monuments stand on raised platforms with a few steps; a driver can drop you close to the gate.
  • Sesai Sun Temple (Places of worship · 45–60 minutes plus travel) — The temple sits on a raised platform; a few steps to reach it. The surroundings are rural with little seating or shade. Roads in the district can be slow, so allow extra time.
  • Tatya Tope Memorial (Culture and craft · 15–20 minutes) — The memorial is at street level with no stairs. Traffic and crowds in the market area can be noisy, and pavements are uneven. A car can stop close by.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Surwaya Garhi (Culture and craft · 1–2 hours plus travel) — The enclosure has uneven stone ground and a few steps. Seating and shade are limited, and the upper shrine above the matha has no approach for ordinary visitors. Fine for cautious walkers with sturdy shoes.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Narwar Fort (Places to visit · 2–3 hours plus travel) — The fort is large with uneven stone, steps, ramps and little shade or seating. Many parts are ruined. Seniors and anyone with knee trouble should plan on seeing gates and nearby areas by car and skipping the upper climbs.

Practical tips for Shivpuri

  • Heat. April to June is severe, with May highs averaging above 40°C. Do outdoor sights in the first hours after sunrise and rest in the afternoon.
  • Winter mornings. December and January mornings are chilly, with average lows near 8°C. Bring a warm layer for open-vehicle park drives.
  • Getting around. A car and driver is the easiest way to cover the park, the chhatris and any day trips. Autos and e-rickshaws work in town.
  • The park. Hire the vehicle and guide at the gate, start early and confirm which tracks are open after rain.
  • Money. Carry cash for gate fees, small purchases and tips; card acceptance outside hotels is patchy.
  • Monkeys. Monkeys are common near the Tourist Village and some sights. Keep food hidden and do not feed them.
  • Closures and fees. Opening hours and fees for several sights are not published clearly. Check locally or with your hotel before you go.
  • Dress and photography. Dress modestly at temples and the chhatri complex. Photography of exteriors is usually fine; ask before photographing inside shrines.
