Why it matters
Why Sakhya Sagar and the Sailing Club is worth your time
Sakhya Sagar is the largest water body in Madhav National Park and the reason the area holds life through the dry months. It was created as a reservoir for the Scindia ruler when the land was a royal hunting ground, and it was named after Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia. A second, smaller reservoir, Madhav Lake, was made on the Manihar river.
Its conservation value is now formally recognised: Sakhya Sagar was designated a Ramsar wetland site on 7 January 2022. For visitors, that means it is more than a pretty view; it is a working wetland that supports crocodiles, birds and the larger animals that come down to drink.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start at the Sailing Club, which sits at the park's edge by the lake and is among the more scenic spots in the Shivpuri area. If boats are running, a short outing on the water is the best way to see the reservoir; if not, sit on the bank and let the lake come to you. Resident crocodiles lie out on the banks, and waterbirds work the shallows.
The lake is also known for dholes, or wild dogs, and wild boar along the banks, so scan the shoreline as well as the water. Binoculars make a big difference. Early morning is quietest and gives the best light, while the last hour of the day is warm and still.
Keep a safe distance from the water's edge, especially with children. Do not feed animals, and follow any instructions from park staff. Combine it with George Castle for a compact half-day.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Ask at the club whether boating is running
- Bring binoculars and sun protection
- Stay back from the water's edge
- Do not feed wildlife
