George Castle, Shivpuri: History, highlights and visitor guide

A small two-storey lodge on the highest point of Madhav National Park, built in 1911 for a royal stay that never took place. The setting is better than the building, and the viewpoint is the draw.

The short answer

George Castle: what visitors should know first

Worth the short vehicle ride if you are already in the park. It is a modest building with a good view, not a grand castle. Go in the late afternoon for the light, treat it as a rest stop, and check whether the interior is open on the day.

History and context

The story behind George Castle

George Castle was built in 1911 at around 484 m elevation for King George V. Sources differ on which Scindia ruler commissioned it (some name Madho Rao, one names Jivaji Rao), so we leave the name out.

Why it matters

Why George Castle is worth your time

The castle is a small piece of imperial theatre. It was built in 1911 on the order of the Scindia ruler of Gwalior to house King George V for a night during his visit to India. The king shot a tiger on the way and, according to the usual account, never stayed. The building stood ready and unused.

That gap between planning and use is what makes the place worth a stop. It shows how princely states staged hospitality for the British crown, and how forests such as these were treated as royal hunting grounds long before they became a national park. Today it is a viewpoint with a story attached, set in a protected landscape.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

George Castle is reached as part of a park drive, not on its own. The track climbs gradually through dry forest to the high point where the lodge stands, and your driver can park close. Walk round the outside first. The building is compact, with two storeys and a simple form, which explains why some writers call it a dwarf castle.

Use the stop for the view. From the high ground you can look across forest and, depending on the season, towards the lake country around Sakhya Sagar. Late afternoon light works best for photographs, and the quiet is part of the appeal. Keep your voice down, since wildlife is sometimes seen from the road up.

Do not stay long. Half an hour is plenty, and the building itself is of limited interest to people who are not curious about the royal visit that never happened.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit as part of a Madhav National Park drive
  • Ask whether the interior is open
  • Go late afternoon for light
  • Carry water; there is little shade
