Sidhi is a small district town in the north-east of Madhya Pradesh, sitting at about 270 metres above sea level on the Son river basin. Most people who come here are heading for the Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve, whose forests of sal and bamboo cover much of the district. It is a place for slow, low-key travel rather than a checklist of famous sights.

The Sanjay Dubri reserve combines Sanjay National Park and the Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary, and it is connected in popular memory to the white tiger Mohan, captured in this region in 1951. Beyond the forest there is the Son Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary along the rivers, and the 10th-century Shiva temple and monastery at Chandreh, a short drive from town.

This is not an easy region for casual visitors. There is no railway station in the district, the nearest airport is at Rewa, and tourist facilities are modest. Safari booking, forest rest houses and road conditions all need planning, ideally in the cooler months. With a car, a driver you trust and a patient attitude, Sidhi gives a rare view of central India's wilder eastern forests without the crowds.

What and where to eat in Sidhi.

Food to try in Sidhi

Food and restaurants

Sidhi is a small town, and eating here is simple. Expect Hindi-belt vegetarian staples such as dal, roti, sabzi and rice from local dhabas and small restaurants, with tea stalls around the bus stand and market. No long-running named restaurant stands out, so rely on your hotel's kitchen and your driver's suggestions.

If you are travelling into the forest, carry snacks and water, since forest rest houses are basic and there are no restaurants inside the reserve. Stick to bottled water and freshly cooked food.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Sidhi

Shopping

Sidhi is not a shopping destination. The town market sells everyday goods, and there are no well-known craft bazaars. Buy any water, medicines and snacks you need before heading to the forest or villages, and do not expect to find specialist souvenirs.

Hotels that shape the trip, not just the night.

Choose without overthinking

Which Sidhi experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Sanjay National Park or Son Gharial Sanctuary?

Choose Sanjay for tigers, forest scenery and the safari experience; choose the Son sanctuary for river birds and a short low-effort outing. Sanjay needs advance booking, while the river visit is informal.

Sanjay or Dubri?

They are two parts of the same reserve. Start with Sanjay, which has the clearest visitor system, and ask the Field Director's office whether you can enter Dubri on the same booking.

Chandreh or a second safari?

Pick Chandreh if you want a calm, level, culture-led half-day. Pick a second safari if wildlife is the point and you can tolerate bumpy drives.

Sidhi with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan at most one safari a day and rest after lunch; open jeeps are bumpy and tiring.
  • Visit in December to February so the early start is cool but the afternoon is not punishing.
