How to reach Siliguri by air

Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is about 12 km south-west of the city centre and is the gateway to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok and the Dooars. The terminal is being rebuilt, so check the current arrangements with your airline or hotel.

How to reach Siliguri by train

New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) is the main railhead, with long-distance and Vande Bharat services, and one platform for the narrow-gauge hill railway. Siliguri Junction (SGUJ) and Siliguri Town (SGUT) are smaller stations on the same network.

How to reach Siliguri by road

Siliguri sits on the highways that lead north to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok and east into the Dooars. Main bus terminals include one on Hill Cart Road for Sikkim services and one on Sevoke Road for Dooars-bound buses.

Getting around Siliguri

Taxis, app cabs, autos and e-rickshaws work in town, and shared jeeps or private cars handle the hill roads. A private car with a driver is the easiest option for the sights around Salugara, Sukna and Sevoke.

Easy transfers to and in Siliguri

  • Do not plan a hill transfer on the same day as a late arrival. Rest in Siliguri first; the road to Darjeeling and Kalimpong takes hours, and fatigue makes hill roads feel longer.
  • Book your hill car in advance with a reputable operator or your hotel, and agree the vehicle type, luggage and route before you set off.
  • Travel on the day itself with a margin of at least an hour for traffic. Siliguri's roads are congested, and Sevoke Road in particular has heavy truck traffic.
  • Keep medicines and a day's change of clothes in hand luggage, since your main bag may be in a different vehicle or the hotel luggage room.
  • In the monsoon, hill roads can be affected by landslides. Check with your hotel or driver before leaving, and keep a spare day in the plan.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
