Siliguri with elderly parents

Before you go

Siliguri with elderly parents: what to know

  • Do not plan a hill transfer on the same day as a late arrival. Rest in Siliguri first; the road to Darjeeling and Kalimpong takes hours, and fatigue makes hill roads feel longer.
  • Book your hill car in advance with a reputable operator or your hotel, and agree the vehicle type, luggage and route before you set off.
  • Salugara Monastery and the science centre are the most level sights. Sevoke Kali temple has steps, and the forest sanctuary and safari park involve bumpy vehicle rides.
  • Travel on the day itself with a margin of at least an hour for traffic. Siliguri's roads are congested, and Sevoke Road in particular has heavy truck traffic.
  • Keep medicines and a day's change of clothes in hand luggage, since your main bag may be in a different vehicle or the hotel luggage room.
  • In the monsoon, hill roads can be affected by landslides. Check with your hotel or driver before leaving, and keep a spare day in the plan.

Easiest first

Places in Siliguri sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Coronation Bridge (Sevoke Bridge) (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — You can see the bridge from the approach roads or the river bank, with little walking. The road is busy with trucks, so cross carefully and keep close to children and older relatives.
  • Darjeeling Himalayan Railway at NJP (Places to visit · 30 minutes to see; hours to ride) — The platform is level, but stations are busy and trains narrow. The toy train carriages are small with steep steps, so older travellers should check the coach and seating in advance.
  • Gajoldoba Teesta Barrage (Places to visit · Half a day) — Mostly flat riverside paths, with boat boarding that may involve uneven steps and ramps. Sun and wind can be strong, and shade is limited. Bring water and a hat.
  • ISKCON Siliguri (Sri Sri Radha Madhav Sundar Mandir) (Places of worship · 1–1.5 hours) — Mostly level with paved paths, shaded areas and seating in the hall. Prayer and kirtan can be loud and crowded on festival days. Footwear is left outside.
  • North Bengal Science Centre (Culture and craft · 1.5–2 hours) — Mostly level indoor galleries and a science park with paths; seating is available in theatres. Some outdoor sections have heat and little shade in summer. Allow rest stops.
  • Salugara Monastery (Tashi Gomang Stupa) (Places of worship · 45–75 minutes) — The grounds are largely level and there is shade and seating around the stupa. Some monastery buildings have steps or raised thresholds, and shoes come off at the shrine halls. A car can usually drop you close to the entrance.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Ewam India Buddhist Monastery (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — The building is tall but the main shrine areas can be seen from the lower floors. Expect steps and raised thresholds, and a narrow, bumpy approach road. Take a car, and rest at the entrance if you do not want to climb.
  • Hong Kong Market (Shopping · 1–2 hours) — Narrow, crowded lanes with uneven footing and little seating. Pavements are busy and traffic is heavy outside. Take a short stroll rather than a long walk, and use a rest stop at a nearby cafe.
  • Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day) — Most of the visit is by vehicle on rough forest tracks, which can be bumpy for people with back or hip problems. There is little seating and few facilities. Short stops are possible, but you should not expect long walks.
  • North Bengal Wild Animals Park (Bengal Safari) (Places to visit · Half a day) — Most of the park is seen from a vehicle, so walking is limited, but the entrance and enclosure paths can be long. Seating and shade are limited, and the vehicle ride can be bumpy. Carry water and a hat.
  • Sevoke Kali Mandir (Sevokeshwari Kali Temple) (Places of worship · 45–60 minutes) — Listings mention roughly a hundred steps up to the shrine, with few places to sit. Older travellers may prefer to see the temple from the road or ask a driver to wait. The bridge area below is level.

Practical tips for Siliguri

  • Arrival logistics. Agree the exact pick-up point and vehicle type for the airport or NJP in advance. Both are busy, and a pre-arranged taxi saves time. Keep your driver's contact handy.
  • Traffic. Siliguri's roads, especially Hill Cart Road and Sevoke Road, are congested through much of the day. Add at least an hour to any timed plan such as a train.
  • Weather. Summers are warm and humid, and the monsoon brings very heavy rain, so carry an umbrella. Winters are mild and the most pleasant, though mornings can be hazy.
  • Money. Cash is useful in markets and at small restaurants, though cards and UPI work in malls and larger hotels. Keep small notes for tipping and local transport.
  • Dress. Light cotton for most of the year, with a warm layer for winter evenings and for the hill drives. Cover your shoulders and knees, and be prepared to remove footwear at monasteries and temples.
  • Closures. The wildlife park and science centre have weekly off days and notices change, so confirm they are open before you set out. Monasteries and temples may close at midday.
  • Photography. Photography is generally allowed outside monasteries, but be careful inside prayer halls and ask before photographing monks or worshippers. Avoid photographing military areas near the airport.
  • Hill road conditions. Landslides can close hill roads in the monsoon. Check with your hotel or driver on the morning of departure, and allow a flexible schedule.
