Uttar Pradesh's far south-east: Kaimur hill forts, a billion-year-old fossil park, a giant reservoir and quiet temples, well away from the usual circuits.

Sonbhadra is Uttar Pradesh's south-eastern district, lying between the Vindhya and Kaimur hills along the Son River, with Robertsganj as its headquarters. Most travellers know it for power stations and coal, which earned it the nickname Energy Capital of India. Its older story is quieter and more interesting.

The main reasons to come are the forts and the fossils. Vijaygarh Fort is a ruined hill stronghold in the Kaimur Range, with four ponds said never to dry up. Agori Fort stands where the Son, Rihand and Bijul rivers meet, and is reached by boat from Chopan. Salkhan Fossils Park, about 12 km from Robertsganj, holds stromatolites around 1.4 billion years old.

The district also has the Rihand Dam and the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar reservoir, and temples such as Shivdwar. Facilities are basic and distances are long, so Sonbhadra suits travellers who like rural drives and unpolished sights, with a hired car and a flexible plan. It is also reachable from Varanasi, about 88 km away.

What and where to eat in Sonbhadra.

Food to try in Sonbhadra

Food and restaurants

Sonbhadra's food is simple north Indian fare: dal, rice, rotis and sabzi, with litti-chokha and other Bhojpuri-region dishes. Eating options are limited outside Robertsganj and the larger towns, so carry water and snacks on the long drives to the forts. Choose busy dhabas and fresh-cooked food, and ask for less spice if needed. Tea stalls and sweet shops in Robertsganj are reliable for a quick snack, and fruit is a safe choice on the road.

Shopping in Sonbhadra

Shopping

Shopping in Sonbhadra is mostly everyday: markets in Robertsganj and Renukoot sell household goods, local produce and handloom items. There is no major tourist craft street. Mirzapur, nearby, is known for carpets and brassware, and could be a stop on the way from Varanasi.

Choose without overthinking

Which Sonbhadra experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Vijaygarh Fort or Agori Fort?

Vijaygarh is a hill fort with ponds and a palace ruin, reached by road. Agori is a river-bend fort reached by boat. Choose Vijaygarh for walking and views, Agori for the river setting.

Salkhan Fossils Park or the forts, if you have one day?

Do the fossil park and Vijaygarh together, since they lie on the same side of Robertsganj. The park is shorter and easier for older visitors.

Sonbhadra as a day trip or overnight?

A day trip from Varanasi is possible but long. Stay a night in Robertsganj if you want the forts, fossil park and temple without rushing.
