Plan 01

1 day in Sonbhadra

  1. 01

Day 1: Fossil park and fort

Start early from Robertsganj for Salkhan Fossils Park, about 12 km away. Continue on the Churk road to Vijaygarh Fort, about 30 km southeast of Robertsganj, and spend the middle of the day there. Return to Robertsganj in the afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Salkhan Fossils Park (Sonbhadra Fossils Park)1 to 1.5 hoursModerateOctober to March, in the morning
Vijaygarh Fort2 to 3 hours on site; half a day with the driveDemandingOctober to March; avoid the monsoon and summer heat

Pace: Vijaygarh Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Salkhan Fossils Park (Sonbhadra Fossils Park): A short walk along trails on uneven ground with limited shade. Distances are small, but there are few confirmed seats, so older visitors should take a stick and a hat.

With parents at Vijaygarh Fort: The fort is on a hill with steep, uneven ground, ruined stairs and little shade or seating. Older visitors can enjoy the lower gateway and viewpoints, but should not attempt the full circuit.

Pacing

Pacing a Sonbhadra trip for parents and children

  • Use a hired car with a driver; roads are long and facilities are scarce.
  • Choose the fossil park, Shivdwar and the dam view over the hill-fort climbs.
  • Travel in the cooler months and start early.
  • Carry water, snacks and any regular medicines; nothing is guaranteed on site.
  • Avoid temples on festival days; Shravan and Shivaratri are very crowded.
  • Agree boat arrangements for Agori Fort in advance and check water levels.
