Bhangarh Fort: what visitors should know first
Only if you have a full day and enjoy ruins. The last 2 km of the approach is unpaved, there is little shade and the site has a reputation more for legends than for facilities.
History and context
The story behind Bhangarh Fort
The town was built in 1573 by Bhagwant Das as the residence of his second son, Madho Singh. It is made of stone and brick, with temples inside the main gate and the royal palace at the far end. Local tales of curses explain its ruin, but they are folklore rather than recorded history.

Why it matters
Why Bhangarh Fort is worth your time
Bhangarh shows a planned fort-town of the late sixteenth century and its decline. It is a reminder of how a hill settlement could be built, flourish and then be abandoned.
The legends around it have given it a wide reputation, but the stone temples and palace ruins are the lasting interest.
For a visitor based at Tijara, it is the most adventurous outing on offer: a long drive, an unpaved final stretch and a quiet walk through temples and palace ruins that few tour groups reach on a weekday. Go for the setting and the stonework, and leave the ghost stories to the guides.
