Tijara lies in the north-east corner of Rajasthan, in the National Capital Region, roughly 55 km north-east of Alwar and about 110 km from Delhi. It sits in Khairthal-Tijara district and is reached by State Highway 25. The surrounding landscape is that of Mewat, a borderland where Rajputs, Ahirs, Khanzadas and Meos have all left their mark.

The town has two main reasons to visit. On a hill stands Tijara Fort-Palace, begun in 1835 by Balwant Singh of Alwar, left unfinished when he died in 1845, and restored by Neemrana Hotels as a heritage hotel that opened in January 2016.

In town, the Tijara Jain temple is a Digambar pilgrimage site dedicated to Chandraprabhu, built after a marble idol was discovered in 1956. A fair is held in the month of Shravana, and the complex has a dining hall and dharamshala.

Tijara has few other tourist facilities, so most travellers stay at the fort-palace and use it as a base for day trips to Alwar, Bala Quila and Bhangarh. One or two days is enough, best between October and March.

What and where to eat in Tijara.

Food to try in Tijara

Food and restaurants

Tijara's best-known local food is kalakand, a soft milk sweet that many sweet shops sell. Around the Jain temple, stalls sell pakoras, pickles, papads and panipuri, and the temple's own dining hall serves vegetarian meals. There are few named restaurants worth a special trip.

Guests at the fort-palace usually eat at the hotel, and the Alwar region is known for its own kalakand, so you can compare. Drink bottled water and eat early, as small places close by evening.

Shopping in Tijara

Shopping

Tijara is not a shopping destination. The market near the Jain temple sells savouries, pickles, papads and sweets, and everyday goods can be found in the town bazaar. For handicrafts, Delhi and Jaipur offer far more choice.

Carry cash for small purchases, as card acceptance is limited in the town.

Choose without overthinking

Which Tijara experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Stay at Tijara Fort-Palace or in Alwar?

Stay at the fort-palace for a quiet heritage break and a base close to the Jain temple. Stay in Alwar if you want more restaurants and easier access to Bala Quila and the City Palace.

Tijara Jain temple or Bala Quila?

The Jain temple suits a gentle morning and older visitors. Bala Quila is a demanding hill fort that needs a half day and a car.

Bala Quila or Bhangarh for a day trip?

Bala Quila is closer, fuller and pairs with the City Palace. Bhangarh is a longer drive to ruins and legends, with a rough final approach.
