Before you go
Tijara with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit the Jain temple in the morning; it is level and easy, with benches and a dining hall.
- At the fort-palace, ask for a room in a wing with easier access, as the property is built on a hill.
- Hire a car for Alwar and Bhangarh, and break the day with a long lunch.
- Skip the upper parts of Bala Quila if the climb is too much; the City Palace is easier.
- Carry water, a hat and medicines, as facilities are limited outside the hotel.

Practical tips for Tijara
- Heat. April to June is very hot, with May around 40°C. Plan outdoor sights early and rest in the afternoon.
- Monsoon. July and August are the wettest months. Roads to Bhangarh can be difficult after heavy rain.
- Getting around. Autos work in town. For the fort-palace, Alwar and Bhangarh, hire a car and agree the route in advance.
- Walking. The fort-palace is hillside and terraced; Bala Quila and Bhangarh have uneven ground. Wear grippy shoes.
- Money. Carry cash for small purchases; card use is limited outside the hotel.
- Temple etiquette. At the Jain temple, remove footwear and leather, dress modestly and ask before photographing.
- Fairs. A fair is held in the Shravana month at the Jain temple, so expect crowds then.
- Bookings. Book the fort-palace in advance for weekends and winter, and ask about non-guest access before visiting.
