The short answer

Tijara Fort-Palace: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want a heritage stay or a look at a restored fort-palace. It is a working hotel, so non-guest access depends on the hotel's own policy; call ahead and book if you plan to dine or visit, and confirm rates directly.

History and context

The story behind Tijara Fort-Palace

Balwant Singh, son of Alwar's Moosi Maharani, began building the fort-palace in 1835, together with a Hawa Mahal. After the division of Alwar, he received the Tijara region. He died in 1845 before the work was completed, and the structure stood unfinished for a long time. Neemrana Hotels later restored and completed it as a heritage hotel, which opened in January 2016.

Why it matters

Why Tijara Fort-Palace is worth your time

Tijara Fort-Palace is a rare case of a nineteenth-century palace that was left to decay and then brought back to life. The project saved a large complex that might otherwise have been lost and put the town on the map for travellers who would never have stopped in Tijara.

It also shows how the Alwar rulers' family history shaped the region. Balwant Singh was one of two step-brothers who divided the Alwar state, and the palace was built to reflect his ambitions in the Tijara region before his death halted construction.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book directly with the hotel and ask which wing suits you. The property is divided into several palaces, including the Rani Mahal, Mardana Mahal, Deewar Mahal and Khajur Mahal, and the rooms vary in access and character. If stairs matter, tell the hotel in advance.

On arrival, walk the seven terraced hanging gardens and look at the way the palace is stepped into the hill. The Marigold bar is a central gathering place, and the sunken pool known as Pataal Kund is a striking feature. The rooms in the Rani Mahal are named after leading Indian women painters, which gives the interior a gallery feel.

The palace sits well outside the main tourist circuit, so the experience is quiet and lingering rather than sightseeing-driven. Allow an evening and a morning, and combine your stay with the Jain temple in the town below. If you want to visit without staying, ask whether the hotel permits it and when.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book directly and ask about stair-free rooms
  • Call ahead to ask about non-guest visits
  • Allow an evening and a morning
  • Check rates and room types with the hotel
  • Combine with the Jain temple in town
