Before you go

Vagamon with elderly parents: what to know

  • Hire a car or jeep for the whole day. Distances look short on a map, but the roads climb and twist, and having a vehicle waiting makes rests easy.
  • Thangal Para, Kurisumala and Murugan Para all involve slopes or stairs; ask your driver how far the vehicle can go and choose just one or two in a day.
  • The adventure park's glass bridge has been restricted for visitors who have difficulty walking, so check the current rules and consider the Meadows and pine plantation instead.
  • Carry a light jacket or windcheater. It cools quickly after midday, and mist can bring a sharp drop in temperature.
  • In the monsoon, paths at the pine forest, Marmala waterfall and the sacred hills turn slippery. Wear shoes with grip and skip waterfall walks in heavy rain.
  • Eat and drink at established places, and keep any regular medicines with you; pharmacies are in the larger towns, not at the viewpoints.

Easiest first

Places in Vagamon sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Kurisumala Ashram (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours, or longer for a retreat) — The grounds are on a hill, with some slopes and steps, but the main areas are accessible with care. Seating is available in chapels and guest areas. Quiet is expected throughout.
  • Pine Valley and Pine Forest (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — Mostly level, shaded walking on forest tracks, but pine needles and wet ground can be slippery. There is little seating, and the final approach may involve a short walk from the parking area. Take a stick or an arm if unsteady.
  • Tea Plantations around Vagamon (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours, mostly by car) — Easy from a car, with stops at roadside viewpoints. Walks inside estates may be on steep, slippery slopes, so older travellers should keep to roads and short, level stretches.

Some walking — plan a break (6)

  • Kurisumala Hill (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours) — A steady climb past the stations on grassy, rocky terrain; there is a jeep option for part of the way. Seating is limited and the sun and wind are strong at the top. Older visitors may prefer to stop at lower stations and enjoy the views.
  • Murugan Para (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours) — A moderate climb on uneven ground, with limited seating and shade. Older visitors with knee problems may find it tiring. The shrine is small, so you can stop and rest at the base.
  • Paragliding at Kolahalamedu (Sports · Half a day, including waiting for conditions) — Not suitable for most older travellers. Take-off involves a run on uneven ground, and flights need decent fitness. Watching from the ground, however, is easy and pleasant on a clear day.
  • Thangal Para (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours) — A vehicle track runs part of the way, after which there is a short, uneven climb to the rock and shrine. Handrails and seating are limited, and the surface is slippery after rain. Older visitors can stop at the lower viewpoints.
  • Vagamon Adventure Park and Glass Bridge (Places to visit · 2 to 4 hours, longer on busy days) — The glass bridge has been reported as closed to visitors who have difficulty walking, and rides involve heights and queues. Older visitors usually do better at the Meadows or the pine forest, and can watch the others from the entrance.
  • Vagamon Meadows (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The ground is open and mostly grassy, but it is uneven and exposed, with little seating and no shade. Wind and cool air after noon can tire older visitors. Walk only as far as is comfortable, and keep the car close.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Marmala Waterfall (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the walk) — A walk of about two kilometres through a rubber estate on rough, sometimes slippery ground, with a descent to the fall. Not recommended for people with limited mobility, knees or balance problems.

Practical tips for Vagamon

  • Weather. Mist and showers can arrive within minutes, even in the dry season. Carry a light rain jacket and a warm layer, and plan outdoor viewpoints early, before cloud builds.
  • Getting around. Roads from Kottayam, Pala and Erattupetta climb through ghat sections with sharp bends. Allow more time than the distance suggests, avoid night driving, and agree a day rate with your driver before setting out.
  • Walking and footwear. Grass hills, pine needles and temple steps are slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip, and avoid steep climbs or waterfall approaches after heavy downpours.
  • Money and cash. Carry some small notes for parking, entry fees and tea stalls. ATMs and pharmacies are mostly in the larger town and nearby towns, so withdraw cash before heading to remote viewpoints.
  • Dress and conduct. Dress modestly at Thangal Para, Kurisumala and Murugan Para and keep voices low. Follow any footwear, photography and silence rules, especially at Kurisumala Ashram.
  • Weekends and holidays. The adventure park, the Meadows and the pine forest are busiest on weekends and public holidays, with long queues at the glass bridge. Visit on a weekday or at opening time if you can.
  • Safety. Some rocky areas, ravines and cliff edges around Vagamon are dangerous, and Kerala Tourism flags Mooppan Para in particular. Stay on marked paths, and never swim in waterfall pools.
  • Photography. Early morning gives the clearest light over the hills. Drones may need permission near estates and shrines, so ask locally. Respect worshippers and do not photograph people at prayer without asking.
