Day 1: Barrage, temples and one safari
Reach town early and visit the Gandak Barrage while the light is soft; confirm what you are allowed to photograph. Walk to the old temples near the confluence, including Nardevi and the Shiva shrine linked to the Bettiah Raj. Rest through midday, then take an afternoon drive in the reserve if you hold a booking. End at the riverbank before dark and check current safari slots with the reserve office.

Pacing
Pacing a Valmiki Nagar trip for parents and children
- Book the lodge and safari before you leave; walk-in availability is not guaranteed, especially from December to February.
- Winter mornings are cold in an open vehicle: carry a shawl, a warm jacket, a cap and gloves.
- Safari tracks are rough. A cushion and a middle seat help with backs and hips.
- The nearest large hospitals are in Bagaha, Bettiah or Gorakhpur. Carry your regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit.
- Mobile coverage may be patchy inside the forest and near the border. Tell the lodge your plans each day.
- Take water and snacks on the jeep, and plan rest between the morning and afternoon drives.
