Before you go
Valmiki Nagar with elderly parents: what to know
- Book the lodge and safari before you leave; walk-in availability is not guaranteed, especially from December to February.
- Winter mornings are cold in an open vehicle: carry a shawl, a warm jacket, a cap and gloves.
- Safari tracks are rough. A cushion and a middle seat help with backs and hips.
- The nearest large hospitals are in Bagaha, Bettiah or Gorakhpur. Carry your regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit.
- Mobile coverage may be patchy inside the forest and near the border. Tell the lodge your plans each day.
- Take water and snacks on the jeep, and plan rest between the morning and afternoon drives.

Places in Valmiki Nagar sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Bhitiharwa Gandhi Ashram (Culture and craft · About an hour) — The site is small and mostly level, with a few steps at rooms. Seating is limited, so carry water; the long drive to the village is the harder part.
- Gandak Barrage (Valmiki Nagar Barrage) (Places to visit · About an hour) — Mostly level roadway and railing with little shade; benches are few. Carry water and a hat, and expect wind and sun off the river. A car can usually drop you close to the viewpoints.
- Gandak Boat Safari (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours (confirm locally)) — Mostly seated with minimal walking, but getting into a boat may need balance and a helping hand. The sun can be strong on the water, so use a hat and sunscreen.
- Manguraha Range and Lalbhitiya Sunset Point (Places to visit · A morning or afternoon drive) — Mostly seated in a vehicle, but tracks are rough and the road from Valmiki Nagar is long. Carry water, a cushion and a hat.
- Rampurwa Ashoka Pillars (Culture and craft · 30 to 45 minutes) — The site is open and mostly level but with little shade and few seats. Roads to it may be rough; check conditions with your driver.
- Valmiki Tiger Reserve Jungle Drive (Places to visit · 2.5 to 4 hours per drive) — Drives are seated in a vehicle, so little walking is needed, but tracks are rough and winter mornings are cold. Choose a middle seat, take a cushion and keep rest days between double-drive days.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Nardevi Temple and the old Shiva shrines (Places of worship · Under an hour) — Temple approaches can have steps and uneven paths. Ask your driver about access before you set out, and keep a lighter plan if you tire easily.
- Triveni Sangam at the Gandak (Places to visit · About an hour) — Walks to the riverbank can be uneven, with sandy or muddy ground. Ask about conditions before you take older relatives, and keep to the vehicle if the path is rough.
- Valmiki Ashram (across the border in Chitwan) (Places of worship · Half a day) — Reaching the site can involve walking, crossing a river or driving on rough tracks, and the route is not well signed. Older travellers should ask locally and consider skipping it.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Someshwar Hill and Kalika Temple (Places to visit · Most of a day) — The route is rough and the climb is steep; there are few facilities. Check access and weather with the reserve before setting out. Skip it if anyone in your party has knee, heart or breathing issues.
