Vijayapura, long known as Bijapur and officially renamed in 2014, was the capital of the Adil Shahi sultans from 1490 until the Mughal conquest of 1686. The old name Vijayapura, meaning city of victory, goes back to the Chalukya period. What you see today is mostly the sultans' work: a fort built in two rings with a wall about ten kilometres round, mosques, tombs, a stepwell and, above all, Gol Gumbaz.
The city suits a short, focused trip. Most major sights lie within a few kilometres of one another, so a day can be spent between Gol Gumbaz, the Jama Masjid and the citadel, with Ibrahim Rauza on the western side. Two days leaves time for the lesser sights, the market and a slow lunch. Start early, because the plateau is hot for much of the year and stone surfaces hold the heat.
It is a modest, working town rather than a polished tourist centre, and facilities are plain. Hotels cluster along Station Road, autos and horse carriages do the short hops, and the better meals are simple vegetarian ones. For older travellers the main question is stairs: Gol Gumbaz and Upli Burj involve long climbs, while Ibrahim Rauza and the Jama Masjid are far gentler. Choose accordingly and the city is easy and rewarding.
There is also a practical point about arrival. The new airport has been built but, at the time of writing, scheduled flights had not been confirmed, so most visitors come by train or road from Hubballi, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Solapur or Hyderabad.
