Day 1: Domes, a garden tomb and the fort
Be at Gol Gumbaz when it opens, climb to the whispering gallery while it is quiet, and visit the site museum. Walk or ride to the Jama Masjid for the gilded mihrab, then stop at the stepwell at Taj Bawdi if time allows. Rest through lunch, preferably at a vegetarian restaurant near Gandhi Circle. In the late afternoon, visit Ibrahim Rauza in soft light, then see Malik-e-Maidan on its bastion before dusk.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Gol Gumbaz 1.5 to 2 hours, including the dome gallery and museum Demanding First thing in the morning; November to February for comfortable weather Jama Masjid 30 to 45 minutes Easy Morning, avoiding midday heat and Friday prayer hours Taj Bawdi 20 to 30 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon Ibrahim Rauza About 1 hour Easy Late afternoon for soft light; November to February for comfort Malik-e-Maidan 20 to 30 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon, to avoid midday sun on the bastion Pace: Gol Gumbaz involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Gol Gumbaz: The ground-floor hall is level and cool, but the whispering gallery is reached by stair towers with many steps and narrow turns, and there is little seating on the way. Many older visitors enjoy the hall and the lawns and skip the climb.
With parents at Taj Bawdi: The approach is through a gateway on level ground, but the steps down to the water are worn and may be slippery. Keep to the upper level if you have mobility concerns.

Day 2: Ibrahim Rauza and the citadel
Begin at Ibrahim Rauza for its carving and garden, then see Malik-e-Maidan on the western bastion. Work through the citadel with Gagan Mahal, Asar Mahal and, if you have energy, the Upli Burj climb. Finish at Jod Gumbaz or rest before dinner.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ibrahim Rauza About 1 hour Easy Late afternoon for soft light; November to February for comfort Malik-e-Maidan 20 to 30 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon, to avoid midday sun on the bastion Gagan Mahal 20 to 30 minutes Easy Late afternoon, when the arch is in warm light Asar Mahal 20 to 30 minutes Easy Morning or late afternoon Upli Burj 30 to 45 minutes Demanding Morning or late afternoon; November to February Jod Gumbaz 30 minutes Easy Morning, outside busy prayer times Pace: Upli Burj involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Malik-e-Maidan: Reaching the cannon involves a short climb of steps up to the bastion platform with a handrail in places. The platform is open and exposed to sun, with little seating, so go early.
With parents at Upli Burj: A long staircase with an uneven surface and a sheer drop at the top. There is no lift and little seating, so it is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility or a fear of heights.

Day 3: A day trip
Take a day trip to Almatti Dam on the Krishna river for the reservoir and, in the right season, the birdlife; or, with an early start and a driver, add Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal as a longer trip, ideally with an overnight.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Vijayapura trip for parents and children
- Plan Gol Gumbaz for opening time and decide in advance whether to climb to the whispering gallery; the long staircases have little seating.
- Ibrahim Rauza, the Jama Masjid and Asar Mahal involve little climbing and are the easiest sights for older visitors.
- Avoid midday outdoors from March to May; the plateau is hot and stone holds the heat.
- Hire an auto or car for the whole day and agree the fare in advance; autos here have no meters.
- Carry water, a hat and socks for the stone floors of the tombs and mosques.
- Hotels are mostly basic; ask about lifts, hot water and ground-floor rooms before booking.
