Before you go

Vijayapura with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan Gol Gumbaz for opening time and decide in advance whether to climb to the whispering gallery; the long staircases have little seating.
  • Ibrahim Rauza, the Jama Masjid and Asar Mahal involve little climbing and are the easiest sights for older visitors.
  • Avoid midday outdoors from March to May; the plateau is hot and stone holds the heat.
  • Hire an auto or car for the whole day and agree the fare in advance; autos here have no meters.
  • Carry water, a hat and socks for the stone floors of the tombs and mosques.
  • Hotels are mostly basic; ask about lifts, hot water and ground-floor rooms before booking.

Easiest first

Places in Vijayapura sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Asar Mahal (Culture and craft · 20 to 30 minutes) — Mostly level approaches with a few steps. Little seating. Check whether the interior is open, as access has varied.
  • Bara Kaman (Places to visit · 30 minutes) — Mostly level ground on a raised platform with a few steps. Little seating or shade, so avoid midday. Suitable for most older visitors.
  • Gagan Mahal (Places to visit · 20 to 30 minutes) — Mostly level grounds and a short walk from the road. Little seating and little shade, so avoid midday.
  • Ibrahim Rauza (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The grounds are mostly level, with a few steps up to the tomb and mosque platforms. There are paths and some shade, but little seating. It is one of the easiest major sights in the city for older visitors.
  • Jama Masjid (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The courtyard and prayer hall are level, with no stairs to speak of. The stone floor can be very hot in the afternoon, so go early. Seating is limited.
  • Jod Gumbaz (Places of worship · 30 minutes) — Mostly level grounds with a few steps up to the platforms. Limited seating and shade. Suitable for most older visitors.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Gandhi Circle Market (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Crowded lanes, uneven ground and little seating. Older visitors may prefer a short visit, with a companion and a stop at a restaurant nearby.
  • Malik-e-Maidan (Places to visit · 20 to 30 minutes) — Reaching the cannon involves a short climb of steps up to the bastion platform with a handrail in places. The platform is open and exposed to sun, with little seating, so go early.
  • Taj Bawdi (Places to visit · 20 to 30 minutes) — The approach is through a gateway on level ground, but the steps down to the water are worn and may be slippery. Keep to the upper level if you have mobility concerns.
  • Vijayapura Citadel (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours on foot) — The ground is broad but uneven, with stretches of gravel, grass and worn stone and little seating. Older visitors can see Gagan Mahal and the moat edge from a short walk, and use an auto between the sights rather than walking all of them.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Gol Gumbaz (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours, including the dome gallery and museum) — The ground-floor hall is level and cool, but the whispering gallery is reached by stair towers with many steps and narrow turns, and there is little seating on the way. Many older visitors enjoy the hall and the lawns and skip the climb.
  • Upli Burj (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — A long staircase with an uneven surface and a sheer drop at the top. There is no lift and little seating, so it is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility or a fear of heights.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Vijayapura

  • Heat. March to May is very hot, with mean highs of 37 to 39 degrees. Plan outdoor sights for the first hours after opening and rest through the afternoon. Stone floors can burn bare feet.
  • Getting around. The main sights are close together. Autos have no meters, so settle the fare first, or hire a car and driver for the day. Horse carriages are available at MG Square and outside Gol Gumbaz.
  • Walking and stairs. Gol Gumbaz and Upli Burj involve long climbs with little seating. Ibrahim Rauza, the Jama Masjid and Gagan Mahal are far easier.
  • Money. Carry cash for autos, small stalls and entry fees. UPI works in many shops, but not at every stall.
  • Dress and etiquette. Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and dargahs and remove shoes. Avoid Friday prayer hours at the Jama Masjid, and ask before photographing worshippers.
  • Tickets and hours. Major monuments are ticketed with higher rates for foreign visitors. Hours and fees change, so confirm locally or with the Archaeological Survey of India. A small leaflet describing the sights is sold at some monuments.
  • Photography. Still photography is generally allowed at the monuments, with separate charges at some sites for video. Light is best early and late in the day.
  • Food and water. Vegetarian meals are the safest bet. Stick to bottled or filtered water, and ask your hotel for a current restaurant recommendation.
