Why it matters
Why Barkot is worth your time
Barkot matters as the practical hinge of the journey. A day's drive from Dehradun leaves you at a lower altitude where it is easy to rest, and the next day's drive takes you to the trailhead. Without a town like this, the Yamunotri yatra would be much harder for families and older pilgrims.
It also lets you see the valley outside the temple season. Barkot is a real mountain town on the Yamuna, with a long working life that continues after the yatra ends.

How to experience it
Arrive in the afternoon, check in and rest after the drive. Barkot is a working town, so you will find shops, simple restaurants and chemists, which is useful for picking up anything you forgot. Stretch your legs along the river, and, if the sky is clear, look for views of the high peaks to the north, including the Bandarpunch massif.
Use the evening to arrange the next day: confirm your car for the final stretch to Janki Chatti, check road conditions with your driver and plan an early start. The road beyond Barkot is slow, narrow and sensitive to weather, so give yourself time.
On the way back, Barkot is a pleasant place for a meal and an overnight stop before the long drive to Dehradun or Mussoorie. If the drive up was tiring for elders, a night here on the return is a good idea.
