The short answer

Saptarishi Kund: what visitors should know first

Only for experienced trekkers with a guide. This is a difficult route over moraine and glacier, not an extension of the pilgrim walk. For most visitors, Yamunotri itself is the right place to stop.

History and context

The story behind Saptarishi Kund

Wikipedia notes that the source of the Yamuna is described in different ways: as a frozen lake and glacier on Kalind Mountain at about 4,421 m, above the shrine and not generally accessible, or as the Yamunotri Glacier at a higher elevation. The accounts conflict, and I could not verify which is correct.

Why it matters

Why Saptarishi Kund is worth your time

Saptarishi Kund matters mostly as an idea: sources describe it as the lake from which the Yamuna rises, linked to the legend of the seven sages (saptarishi). Accounts differ about the exact source, with some placing it at the Yamunotri glacier, so it helps to treat the lake as the traditional answer.

For trekkers, it turns a pilgrimage stop into a genuine Himalayan expedition. For everyone else, knowing it exists helps explain why Yamunotri is called the source of the river although the shrine itself is not at the glacier.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The trek begins at Yamunotri, usually after arriving at Janki Chatti and walking up to the shrine. One operator's itinerary lists a roughly 12 km day from Yamunotri to the lake and back, through forest, a meadow called Damini Bugyal, moraine and a glacier crossing, climbing to about 4,400 m. Distances and days vary between operators, so treat figures as indicative.

Operators recommend May, June, September and October for the trek and advise avoiding July and August because of landslides and slippery moraine. The route is described as one of the more difficult in Uttarakhand, so go with an established operator who provides certified trek leaders, local guides, porters and tents.

Bring layered cold-weather clothing, waterproofs, boots with good ankle support and any medication you may need. Build in a rest day at lower altitude before the trek. If anyone in the group feels unwell with altitude symptoms, descend; do not push on.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a registered guide and operator
  • Obtain park permission before starting
  • Allow acclimatisation days
  • Avoid July and August
  • Carry full cold-weather gear
