Before you go
Alwar (Sariska) with elderly parents: what to know
- Do Sariska safaris in winter mornings only if you can tolerate a cold open vehicle; carry a jacket and a blanket in December and January.
- Choose the City Palace museum, Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri and Siliserh as your core. They are mostly level and take little effort.
- Bala Quila is a long steep climb and access is controlled; skip it unless you have confirmed permission and a vehicle.
- Pandupol and Kankwari involve rough forest roads in a jeep. Ask your driver and the forest office whether the track is open and suits the passengers.
- Break long days with a rest after lunch; May to June afternoons are dangerous heat for anyone elderly.
- Hire a car for the whole day for Sariska or Bhangarh. There is little public transport on those routes.
Easiest first
Places in Alwar (Sariska) sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Baba Thakur Das and Sons (Alwar kalakand) (Food and restaurants · 15 to 30 minutes) — A simple counter stop with very short walking. Seating is limited or none; you can buy and eat in the car. The sweet is rich, so older travellers on a restricted diet should buy a small box.
- City Palace and Government Museum (Places to visit · 90 minutes to 2 hours) — Mostly level, with stairs between the three galleries on upper floors. The rooms are shaded and cool, and benches appear in some halls. Ask staff about lift or ramp options if stairs are a problem.
- Moosi Maharani ki Chhatri (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes) — A few steps lead up to the cenotaph terrace, and the stepped tank has stairs on all sides. The tank edge is uneven in places. Seating is limited; allow short stops.
- Siliserh Lake and Palace (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — Mostly level with some steps to the palace terrace and the boating jetty. There is shade and seating near the water. Boarding boats can need a hand with the step down.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Fateh Jung ka Gumbad (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — Level grounds around the base, but the tomb has several steep stairs inside. The garden has some benches and shade. Heat can be strong on the open ground.
- Kankwari Fort (Places to visit · Half a day) — The drive is long and bumpy; the fort itself needs scrambling over uneven stone. Little shade and no seating. Not suitable for anyone with a bad back or limited mobility.
- Pandupol Hanuman Temple (Places of worship · Half a day including travel) — The shrine lies at the end of a forest track and the final approach can be rough. The temple itself is small. Shade is limited and seating is basic. Visit only if comfortable with a rough vehicle ride.
- Sariska Tiger Reserve (Places to visit · One safari shift (about 3 to 3.5 hours)) — Safari vehicles have high steps, little back support and rough tracks. Mornings in December and January are cold. The ride is not strenuous, but it is shaken and long. Seniors should choose the afternoon shift, wear layers and sit on a cushion if allowed.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Bala Quila (Alwar Fort) (Places to visit · 2–3 hours if open) — The approach is steep and long, and the interior has uneven stone paths. Older travellers will be better off viewing the fort from below or taking a vehicle if one is allowed. There is little shade or seating along the way, so carry water.

Practical tips for Alwar (Sariska)
- Heat. May highs average about 40°C and June is almost as hot, so avoid those months for outdoor sights. November to February is the comfortable window.
- Sariska closure. The core area is reported closed from July to September. Confirm current dates before building a trip around a safari.
- Book safari early. Safari vehicle numbers per shift are limited. Book through the official channel as far ahead as you can in the cooler months.
- Bhangarh timing. An ASI signboard bars entry before sunrise and after sunset. Plan to arrive in daylight and leave well before dusk.
- Bala Quila access. The hill is within Sariska's boundary and access is controlled. Ask the local forest office or your hotel what permission is needed.
- Dress. Wear modest, comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Cover shoulders and knees at temples and carry a scarf.
- Money. Carry cash for small shops and entry gates; many smaller sights do not take cards.
- Photography. Check rules on cameras and drones at museums, in the reserve and at ASI sites; some places charge extra for photography.
