Thai food is not vegetarian by default. Fish sauce, shrimp paste, oyster sauce and egg are common in dishes that look meat-free, and street stalls often share woks and oil between meat and vegetable orders. Strict Indian vegetarians and Jains should not rely on asking for 'no meat' alone. The most reliable options are Indian vegetarian restaurants, dedicated vegan restaurants, and Buddhist-style jay (เจ) food, which is made without meat, fish or egg and is sold under yellow flags, especially around the Vegetarian Festival in Chinatown. Ask even then, since not every stall keeps strictly to the rules.

Bangkok has one of Southeast Asia's best Indian dining scenes. The Sukhumvit Soi 11 and Nana area has long-running pure vegetarian restaurants such as Dosa King and Khana Khazana, and the Phahurat district, west of Chinatown, is the old Indian quarter with sweet shops and small eateries. Vegan restaurants such as May Veggie Home Express and the vegan menu at Suananda in Silom give you plant-based Thai dishes. These are the venues we verified for this guide; opening hours change, so confirm before travelling. In Phahurat, Royal India reportedly offers a vegetarian set menu and Punjab Sweets serves vegetarian snacks upstairs, though both also need confirming. Jain travellers should phone ahead: we found no restaurant that clearly states a Jain kitchen or no-onion, no-garlic cooking. Bottled or filtered water is the safe choice, and ice in good restaurants is usually made from treated water.

Menus and kitchens change. If you follow a strict diet or have an allergy, confirm with the restaurant before you order.
