Before you go
Bintan with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose a resort at Lagoi if mobility is limited; hotels meet the ferry and distances inside each resort are short.
- For Penyengat, board small boats slowly, ask for a hand on the jetty and use a local ride between sights.
- Visit in the morning; midday heat is humid and shade is limited at Trikora and Penyengat.
- Carry travel insurance with medical evacuation, since we could not confirm local hospital capacity.
- Write to your hotel about vegetarian, Jain or low-spice meals before you arrive.
- Keep a spare day in the plan for ferry delays and heavy rain.
Easiest first
Places in Bintan sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Lagoi Bay and Bintan Resorts (Places to visit · 2 to 4 nights) — Resorts are flat and most hotels offer shuttles to and from the ferry terminal, according to a travel guide. Distances between areas are large, and ride-hailing is unreliable, so rely on hotel transfers.
- Masjid Raya Sultan Riau (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The grounds are flat and short, but there are steps up to the prayer hall and visitors go barefoot, so the floor can be hot at midday. Visit early, and ask whether a ramp or side entrance can be used.
- Museum Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alamsyah (Culture and craft · 1 hour) — A former school building with display rooms; we could not confirm lifts, ramps, seating or air conditioning, so ask before you go. Keep the visit short in the heat.
- Royal Tombs and Raja Ali Haji's Grave (Culture and craft · 30 to 45 minutes) — Mostly short flat paths, but some steps and uneven ground lead to the tomb enclosures. Shade is limited, so carry water and sit when needed.
- Treasure Bay Crystal Lagoon (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — Shallow beaches, flat sand and one air-conditioned restaurant nearby for a cool rest. Shade is limited, so bring a hat. Check for lifeguards and steps into the water.
- Trikora Beach (Places to visit · Half a day to a full day) — Flat sand and simple wooden huts for shade, but no hospital nearby and sun is strong. Bring water, a hat and plan the drive back before late afternoon. Toilets and showers are basic.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Laguna Bintan Golf Club (Sports · Half a day for 18 holes) — Golf buggies are typical at resort courses, but we could not confirm. Heat and humidity are high, so play early, carry water and rest between holes.
- Pulau Penyengat (Places to visit · Half a day (3 to 4 hours on the island)) — The island is flat apart from Bukit Kursi, but the boat jetty has uneven steps and the boats are small open pompongs, so board slowly and ask for a hand. Shade is patchy, and there is little seating, so carry water and take a local ride between sights if walking is hard.
- Senggarang Temples and Stilt Village (Places of worship · 2 to 3 hours) — Boat boarding is awkward and the village walkways can be narrow and uneven over water. Older travellers should go with a companion, wear non-slip shoes, and skip the stilt walkways if unsteady.

Practical tips for Bintan
- Rain. The airport station averages about 3,000 mm a year, with November the wettest. Pack a light waterproof and keep slack in the plan.
- Heat and humidity. Daily highs are around 30 to 31 degrees all year with high humidity. Do outdoor sights in the morning.
- Getting around. Public transport is limited. Arrange hotel shuttles or a car with driver, and fix taxi prices before boarding.
- Dress. Bintan is Muslim-majority outside the resorts. Cover shoulders and knees at the mosque and in Tanjung Pinang.
- Money. Rupiah is used outside the resorts; the resorts also accept Singapore dollars, and meals add tax and service charges per a dated travel guide.
- Time zone. Bintan is one hour behind Singapore and 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of India. Leave ample time before onward flights.
- Ferries. Reconfirm your return ferry on arrival, especially at weekends, since ferries can fill up and weather can cause delays.
- Water and health. Drink bottled water. Carry travel insurance, since we could not confirm local hospital capacity.
