Before you go
Chandragiri with elderly parents: what to know
- Break the journey with a night at Taptapani instead of driving from Berhampur and back in one day.
- Visit the monastery for the morning prayers and avoid the midday closure.
- Carry water, snacks, medicines and cash; shops and pharmacies are limited.
- Choose a car with good ground clearance and a driver used to hill roads.
- Use the toilet at your lodge or the monastery before starting out; public toilets are scarce.
Easiest first
Places in Chandragiri sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Chandragiri Bazaar (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The street is short and flat with plenty of places to sit for tea, but toilets and pharmacies are limited. Carry essentials, because help is far away.
- Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours with the monastery nearby) — Roads between camps are short and fairly quiet, and a hired car can cover them. There are few benches and no public toilets to rely on, so use facilities at the guest house or monastery before setting out.
- Taptapani Hot Spring (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours; overnight if staying at the Odisha Tourism lodge) — Level paths and hot water suit older travellers, and room bathrooms at the Odisha Tourism lodge are piped with spring water. Seating near the spring is limited and the steps down can be wet.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Lakhari Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day for a short forest outing; a full day or an overnight at the rest house for the birding trail) — There is no developed visitor infrastructure to rely on: tracks are forest roads, shade is good but seating, toilets and medical help are far away. Older travellers do better on short, vehicle-supported visits near the Chandragiri gate.
- Mahendragiri (Places to visit · A full day from Paralakhemundi or Berhampur) — The summit can be reached by a motorable road, but the temples involve steps and uneven stone paths. There are few facilities, so take water, food and a companion.
- Padmasambhava Mahavihara (Jirang Monastery) (Places of worship · 1.5 to 2 hours, longer if you stay for prayers) — The approach and courtyard are open and mostly level, but the building is five storeys and moving between halls involves steps. Seating is limited, so take a cushion or ask staff about a bench for prayers.

Practical tips for Chandragiri
- Roads. Roads from Taptapani and Berhampur are narrow and winding, and they become difficult in the monsoon. Use a driver who knows them and avoid driving after dark.
- Money. Carry cash in small notes. Card and UPI acceptance in the hill shops is patchy, and ATMs are scarce.
- Supplies. Bring water, snacks and medicines. Pharmacies and restaurants are limited in Chandragiri itself.
- Dress. Dress modestly in the monastery with shoulders and knees covered. Remove shoes where asked.
- Photography. Ask before photographing residents, monks or inside halls. Exterior shots of the monastery are normally fine.
- Timing. Aim for the monastery's morning prayers and avoid the midday closure. Evening prayers are reported around 4 pm.
- Weather. Winter mornings can be misty and cool. Summers are warm, and June to September brings heavy rain.
- Stay. There are no hotels in the village. Book a guest house early or plan overnight stops at Taptapani or Berhampur.
