Fatehgarh Sahib neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Near Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib

Best for: Pilgrims who want to be at the gurdwara at dawn or for the evening kirtan

Good to know: The most convenient base. The gurdwara complex and its sarai-style lodging are part of the pilgrim tradition, and a few private guest houses exist nearby. Expect basic comfort, early starts and heavy crowds around the December mela.

Sights in this area: Gurdwara Burj Mata Gujri (Thanda Burj)

  2. 02

    Sirhind town

Best for: Travellers who want more food and shopping choices

Good to know: A larger town with more roadside restaurants and transport links, a few kilometres from the main gurdwara. It also has the railway junction. Good if you want to combine Mughal sights with an easy rail arrival.

  3. 03

    Patiala or Chandigarh (day-trip bases)

Best for: Travellers who prefer a wider choice of hotels and want only a single day here

Good to know: Both are about an hour or more by road and give better hotel and restaurant options. Leave early to reach the gurdwara before the queues, and return in the evening.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
