The short answer

Genting SkyWay: what visitors should know first

Use it when you are coming from the Gohtong Jaya side, or when the Awana SkyWay is closed. It is longer than the Awana line, takes about 15 minutes each way, and drops you at the Genting Grand complex.

History and context

The story behind Genting SkyWay

The Genting SkyWay opened to the public on 1 February 1997 and was officially opened by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on 21 February. The line is about 3.4 km long, with 22 towers, the tallest 51 m. A planned extension towards Batang Kali was never built.

Why it matters

Why Genting SkyWay is worth your time

The Genting SkyWay opened on 1 February 1997 and has been one of the main ways to the summit ever since. It was built by Leitner and engineered by Arup, and the project cost RM128 million. It is a practical backup whenever the newer Awana line is closed.

For visitors, the difference is route and mood. This line starts in a township, climbs a long slope and arrives at the older part of the resort. It is a good choice when you are staying at hotels near Gohtong Jaya, or if the Awana car park is full.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The long climb

At 3.4 km it is the longer of the two lines and gives a wide view over Selangor on clear days.

  2. 02

    A backup line

When the Awana line is closed, this one usually runs extended hours.

  3. 03

    Gohtong Jaya start

The lower station is in the township, which also has the memorial hall for the resort's founder.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Park at Gohtong Sentral in Gohtong Jaya or arrive by bus or taxi, and join the queue for the gondola. Each cabin carries up to eight people, and the ride takes roughly a quarter of an hour, climbing about 870 m over a line of 22 support towers.

The views are of the rainforest, the town below and, on clear days, the plains of Selangor. The upper station is at the Genting Grand end of the resort, so you arrive close to the casino, hotels and the walkway towards the rest of the complex.

It operates more limited hours than the Awana line, so plan to ride up in the morning and come down before evening. If you are returning late, check the last ride time or use the Awana line instead.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the operating hours; they are shorter than the Awana line normally
  • Ride up in the morning and down before evening
  • Note which station you will use before you park
  • Bring a light jacket for the summit
  • Check for maintenance notices before you travel
